What's new

Jazz reaction to the Sterling ban.

I'll bet most of us have said a thing or two in confidence that we'd not like broadcast to the world. I know I have.

If they involve referring to black people as universally "the enemy", then that person is a giant piece of **** as well and not fit to be a public figure of any stature whatsoever.

What Sterling said was racist and possibly stubbornly hateful, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of someone being forced out of business for making a stupid and racist remark. I guess something like this can end a political career or any other that relies upon a person's popularity.

The punishment should fit the crime, but I'm not sure what the crime is. Maybe this is classified as hate speech, and it violates the rules of NBA ownership.

It sounds like he's going to be forced to sell the team and be barred from attending NBA games....all because he made an ignorant comment that was surreptitiously recorded and shopped to TMZ. The whole situation just seems odd to me.

If he was caught using cocaine, or if he bet on games, or he hired a (male?) prostitute...do you think he would receive the same banishment?

I just don't know.

Michael Jordan allegedly once called Kwame Brown a ****ing ****** [insulting anti-homosexual slur] in a practice in front of other players, but nothing came of it.

Jason Kidd supposedly once beat his wife. Kobe Bryant attended criminal rape hearings right before a game. Karl Malone allegedly had sex with an underage girl.

Etc.

I'm just amazed at how this whole situation escalated.

The punishment should fit the crime, but I'm not sure what the crime is.

The crime is he is an embarrassment to humanity and is thus a HUGE liability to the company/league. If nothing else, it is in the best interest of the league to banish him to protect itself.

And I wouldn't call making a billion off the sale of his team that he paid almost nothing for and put almost nothing into until the last couple of years a punishment, exactly.

He's done worse in the public eye that got completely ignored by the nba. Like I said above. The nba would've taken a big hit had they not done anything. Sterling is in this position becuse of Sterling, and nothing else.

Never thought of it that way. Now im depressed. He's going to get off easy. Lol

Whether Charles Barkley or any other celebrity/public figure wants to believe it or not, they ARE subject to more scrutiny and they will HAVE to learn to be better people or pay the price. In this age especially, whatever cracks you have or you begin to develop will show, and I personally think that is generally a good thing because most people treat whatever fame they get as fuel for their god complex, not as fuel to better themselves.

So I guess this would be similar to getting fired for embarrassing the company with a scandal or a really stupid tweet.

Okay, I guess I understand it.

Does that picture mean "We are the nice white minority surrounded by the black emptiness"?

I kid. Not from the States. Ignore me.
No it means that we should all welcome Boylen as the next HC of the Jazz. There's simply no room for hatred anymore. Let UofU and BYU alumni come together.

What about the party that has jumped on the Messini bandwagon? I'm sure there are many people in the world that wants him, including me. Not saying that I don't want Boylen. Just saying that a strong character, experienced European coach or a coach that is familiar with European patterns of the game should be given a chance for a few years, at least the time given to Corbin, because I have been strongly believing that the Jazz have the potential to become the next Spurs in the nearest future.

what bugs me is that this whole thing stems from a tape that was illegally provided.
if this were a penal hearing he would walk away.

Besides did Sterling really have a criminal intent in terms of being a racist and provoking others in this sense or was he just uttering stuff about his personal life?
Has he ever been a racist publicly?

I hate racism, no need to repeat that.
For many of you, I am just another godless socialist, which I am not, but in Amerikkah you know Obama is a crypto-communist, too.
But I had to ask those questions above and I really dont care about political correctness.

You have a condo for rent and two families have come and visited; one Jewish another Mormon.
You as a mormon "may" be inclined to let the second family get the condo, for obvious reasons; would that make you a racist?
After the inking of the contract, you went back home, told your wife "thank God I avoided those kosher-eating middle eastern semites" and took a shower, whereas your evil wife was recording this utter BS.
would that make you a racist?
'tis all gray, if you ask me.

edit: I listened to the tape again. this chick has deliberately said things that are a) too-manifestly politically correct
and/or
b) provocative (it is in my blood lalala)

I say Sterling is one old SOB but he has been cheated heavily in this. He is one old frustrated man who can't get it up and jealous of African American boyz having their way with this hot chick.
In a heated moment, many of us say stuff we may regret later.
(But he at times is just too cool-headed in his defamation, I must add.)
I hope I am not misunderstood, this is that devil's advocate in me.

You would know far more than me in terms of laws that cover what racism is as a crime, but personally I think that the intention a person has is the most important thing when judging him/her (or her/him. why do we always write the male first?). I mean come on, who are we kidding? If a person has racist thoughts, then that person has some notions in her/his mind that can easily transform into hate crimes, war crimes, senseless murders, or at the very least, in kids level, bashing the other race and you know how deep effects that has, we have that saying, ağaç yaşken eğilir (you can't teach an old dog new tricks).

I think trying to get rid of racism is always a good effort for the sake of humanity. But in this sole case, I think there is political moves and motives that drive the whole event. I was not aware of Sterling's racist background, but obviously many people were. Now that the association has a new boss, he has his own schemes set and wants to see who is with him and who is not. This is exactly like th Godfather, or the Wire's street gangs, or things similar.

Above all, anti-racism is a value and stand, only kept within the American borders. I don't see them -the government too anti-racist out of those borders most of the time.

Sterling also put it "it is not your skin.. why are you making things up?"
That cannot be ignored.
He says all these "right" things during the talk like 10 times.

He just wants her not to publicize her personal affairs with guys who happen to be black on instagram and not to bring those friends to the games.
that is all.

Media creates a s.h.t.storm, everybody gets sentimental and noone really takes a look at the core issues.
I think he is a racist but does this tape warrant that hefty reaction from the association?

as regards, he/she Addiictionary bro:., I recently wrote and published a paper on law, I used "she" only. There is this academic writing thing going on for ages.
That third person does not really have to be a "he" and I kinda liked the "she" version moar!

And I want to add one more thing.

What kind of a white trash person has racist thoughts and still feeds the African American players with millions of dollars to give his franchise the success?

That is a good example to how inconsistent, hypocrite, touched in the head, most of the racists are.

I live in the hood.
Come f$3@ wit me.
Like uh BAWSE.

His tape, even though it was intended to be a private conversation, is now public. As the head of a billion dollar entity, which is also associated with 29 other multi million dollar entities, several billion dollar advertising sponsors, national/global media, and is penetrating almost every American home at this time, your words or actions can reach (or alienate) millions of people almost instantaneously.

His words have alienated the entire black NBA workforce (which comprises ~80% of the body), 14 sponsors have dropped, and public appeal has taken a big hit. What the hell else would you expect silver to do. It is his job to protect and grow the brand, and sterling is outright damaging it, intentionally or otherwise.

These conducts were included in the bylaws of the NBA constitution for this very reason, and silver was in his rights to exercise his actions to protect the multi billion dollar NBA entity.

That and sterling is a dirt bag.

The reaction is a fiscal one for the owners and the NBA, and rightfully so. If you can't understand that (and think "freedom of speech" has anything to do with this) then you truly shouldn't have a voice. It's likely a concept over your pay-grade.

It has everything to do with freedom of speech and the first amendment . This is ******** about how the "NBA constitution" can override an individuals 1st amendment right . So according to this kind of reasoning it is ok to violate rights as long as the majority is ok with it. It is ok to bring back slavery as long as the individual agreed to a contract or " constitution ". We also should not expect any form of privacy in our homes. Intrapment is encouraged and perfectly legal. Murders are fine as well as suicides as long as the individual(s) agreed to the "constitution" of a buisness . It needs to stop Donald is an idiot but had broken no laws.
