Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

It would make a lot of sense to offer same deal as CJ got 4-16, and get Wes locked up early.

1. What makes you think they didn't, and
2. What makes you think that's all it would take to "lock him up?"

But we did nothing, as always, and ended up in a tough situation again.

Are you KOC's brutha-in-law or sumthin? You seem to have an extraordinary amount of "inside information" at your disposal, in this post, and in virtually every other one you make.

This is excellent point. Portland emerged as a suitor only within last few days. And we have supposedly been interested for over 2 weeks. It would make a lot of sense to offer same deal as CJ got 4-16, and get Wes locked up early. I doubt he would be looking too hard elsewhere as a RFA, if we just gave him same deal as CJ got. And of course the deal would not be front loaded, so CAP hit and front money would be about 3.5 or so. But we did nothing, as always, and ended up in a tough situation again. Just like with CJ, just like with Millsap. How many times is it going to take for the Jazz FO to get off their asses and avoid making same mistakes over and over again?

Uh, Jazz matched the CJ offer. They didn't offer it themselves. And the way Siler puts it, they DID talk to Matthews for a contract and Matthews wanted the mid level. Jazz weren't willing to offer the absolute max, and said find another team to offer you that.

What makes you think he would accept 4 and 16 when he just got 9 Million more than that? They still have Millsap at a decent # now that last year is over. They still have CJ at a good # for his contributions. And they can still have Mathews if they think he is worth the money.

I don't think he is worth it. But the Jazz played it the way the should have. Would you rather they go out and bid against themselves like they did with AK and Ostertag? Because those are the 2 worst contracts in the history of this franchise and those are the players that they decided to go out and sign before they had other suitors.

Per Siler:

"Since he's a restricted free agent, Jazz declined to offer full MLE and told him to find from another team. They can match, remember."

Looks like the 3.5-4 M wouldn't have been accepted.

Sorry to burst your bubble on that one.

You haven't bursted anything. Of course Wes is going to ask for MLE. It's called basic negotiations. We could have counted and started negotiating rather than tell him to go find an offer if we really wanted this guy. I mean they said exact same thing to Millsap, and that didn't turn out so well, did it?

I'm not stating my opinion on KOC or the Jazz FO but reading this reminded me of all the people complaining about the Jazz needing to wait and "let the market set the value" of previous players and getting mad that the Jazz "bid against themselves".
I know personally it is about 1.5mil per year more then I was hoping the Jazz could get Wes at, now the question is that worth losing him over?

Hey if they turn this down they are now free to use the MLE on someone else and they can use the TPE's to bring in some more talent to this roster. :)

Just trying to point out the bright side. :)

He was an RFA (which dissuades teams from pursuing him as he is not completely Free Agent) and CJ kind of set the market with 4/16 before. So, it is certainly reasonable to assume he could accept it. Of course that was if we started negotiations and actually moved our asses. According to Siler, KOC told him to find an offer from someone else. You know, same thing he told CJ and Millsap before.

Why counter when the guy can just go to other teams to find the offer he wants. It's a waste of time to negotiate smaller contracts when the guy can just go to 29 teams and see what the offer would be.

And Millsap's contract is only bad for one year, the past one.

To think Matthews would accept 4/16 without testing the market is downright asinine.

Why didn't it turn out so well? They still have him, right?

You continue to be of the delusion that Mathews would have accepted a lower offer without finding out that this offer would be available. Why would he want to do that again? Because you say he would? Because I sure the **** would not do that and would not expect anybody else to either.
