Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Haha this is so pathetic. Can you imagine how fast an agent would get canned if they told their guy to only negotiate with one team and not even bother seeing what is available with another?

Agree on the Millsap deal. Very nice contract now considering what kinds of crazy money has been going this offseason.

1. That deal ended up working out for the Jazz long term
2. Portland CAN'T do the same thing again with no cap room. They are in a similar position as the Jazz with only the MLE to offer really.

Well, we hit the tax really hard last year and ended up dumping talent for nothing (Maynor). Miller has been complaining about these 10 mil upfront for months. I am glad we matched, though, that's for sure. We are cash strapped last and this year because of AK, so it makes sense to try to lessen the hit for first year. Maybe this strategy wouldn't be so bad if we had more room under luxury tax. But when you really need money first year, it would be a good idea to lessen the hit on that first year. You know, the exact opposite of matching an offer sheet.

FAct: The Jazz did the RIGHT thing by matching the offer sheet. Would it be better if they let him walk and have to sign one of Boozer/Amar'e/Lee in this year's FA market ? How many of the signings in this year's FA market is reasonable. Boozer deserves that money? Joe Johnson? Korver? Reddick? Freakin' Milicic? A simple question: Boozer at his new contract value or Millsap at his current contract value? I would go with the latter, without a question. Also, considering the impact and contributions that Paul has provided to this team, it's reasonable to say he is one of the better bigmen in the NBA.

Well your assumption was 100% not reasonable and made you look like a dumb ***. And it does not look like the Blazer's were dissuaded because he did get an offer. Also it would have been stupid for him to accept a lesser offer without finding out if he could get the MLE.

They did negotiate, and they couldn't agree. Now the ball is in the Jazz's court and they get to decide.

Borat, do you distort everything you read in such a way as to make it match your preconceptions?

I don't see Siler sayin this at all. What Siler said suggests that Matthews was asking for the MLE, which the Jazz could always match anyway, and therefore had absolutely no incentive to give it to him.

Whatever happens, Matthews should at least be satisified that he got his "market value," and was not conned by some front office sharpster.

That's why it is a message board :). Besides, I am pretty sure anyone with an ounce of intelligence could do a better job than Memphis GM in something like Gasol trade.
 
Calling it right now: Jazz will match and 3 to 4 years into this contract Matthews is going to look like a BARGAIN compared to what lesser SG's are making on the open market.

Last years Millsap situation is a perfect example. So many people on this board thought Utah was crazy for matching, and now that the poisonous first year of that deal is out of the way, Millsap may be the best bargain in the league at the 4 position and probably will be until that contract runs its course.

The Jazz have handled the Wes Matthews situation exactly how they should have. He came in and asked for the full MLE, the Jazz didn't jump at it and immediately sign him to it. They let the market dicated his worth and now it has. So now they will match it and we will all move on.

And for those who think Utah won't match this, you are certifiably crazy. No way they let Boozer, Korver and Matthews walk in the same offseason. No freakin' way.

So they paid a little extra money last year. And they lost a player they probably would rather have kept. But frankly losing Maynor was nothing in the scheme of things.

I would rather the Jazz handle things this way than the way they did with AK and Tag.
