I'm not surprised either. Pac12 has been great for the utes (I see tons of pac12 stickers on cars around town) + beating byu year after year + utah slowly becoming more democratic/less republican/less mormon + holding your own in the pac12 recently = bigger fan base. Thanks, fish.
This doesn't surprise me - especially the demographic breakdown.

If I were a youngster who was into sports and was picking a favorite team or even an older person just getting interested in sports then I would choose to root for utah too.
It makes sense.
I'm a dolphins fan because when I was starting to get into sports dan marino had just had a great rookie season and set a bunch of records and miami had just went to the superbowl.
So... this is cool!ESPN poll about the best uniforms in the PAC-12.

Oregon leading the voting, no surprise... but kinda neat that the U is 2nd!
Here are some interesting stats from that poll that just came out:
In 2011, 56% of BYU's fans were very conservative, 45% were somewhat conservative.
In 2016, 37% were very conservative, 39% were somewhat conservative. I don't think that they lost all the conservative fans, because Utah's fans are still just as liberal. I think the people that thought they were conservative found out just how crazy the tea party, Trump supporting "conservatives" are and they adjusted their view of themselves.
In 2011, 37% of the women in Utah rooted for BYU. In 2016, 24% of Utah women root for BYU. BYU/the LDS Church is alienating their women.
In 2011, 32% of the women in Utah rooted for Utah. In 2016, 34% of the women root for Utah.
The "I'm not sure who I am a fan of" group went from 10% in 2011 to 18% in 2016. Those are the former BYU fans, probably people that have been disenfranchised by the Church who used to root for BYU but now don't feel like they can support a team that is backed by the Church. The good news is, in five years, they will all be Utah fans...or USC fans. lol.
40% of republicans root for BYU. This was shocking. I thought it would be a lot higher. That has to scare the people at BYU. No wonder you can't sell out your stadium. If you can't get your people to root for you, then who can you get? Also, this blows the whole, "all mormons are BYU fans" theory out of the water. And as far as out of state Mormons? I'd bet that less than 40% follow BYU, which hurts their "national fanbase" theory.
Also, in 2011, 50% of republicans voted for BYU. They are losing their fanbase and losing it fast. I think Bronco leaving BYU will be killer for them. He was an outstanding coach. Sitake will be a worse coach, if for no other reason that he has never done this before.
54% of Liberals root for Utah. Shocker, right?
So, where did BYU fans go? In 2011, 34% of people aged 46-65 rooted for BYU. 44% of people over 65 rooted for BYU. In 2016? 17% of people aged 46-65 and 36% of those over 65 root for BYU. So, is their fanbase just dying off? lul.
The crazy thing is, since 2011, Utah has gone 5-7, 5-7, 9-4, 10-3. Not bad, but not amazing. BYU has had winning records every year. Yet, BYU has lost a TON of fans.
Fish, it's a dying brand. Jump off now, while you still can.
*I wasn't going to comment on this in here because it includes a certain team but then it also deals with Utah more so I deemed this joke (loosely based on possible truth) acceptable*
That is an excellent breakdown but I could've saved you a lot of pixel juice and internet space from all those letters, it's simple all those missing % of fans are because they're old and dying off, if you break it down by age demographic I think Utah was leading in all of them until it about the 65yr old age demographic. Simple math the 80's were a long time ago and people in their prime in those days are getting older and slowly dying off.

So, one week from today it begins.
Any score predictions?
I'm guessing whitt wants his untested offensive skill players to feel a little game day pressure and so he doesn't open up much of the gameplan offensively or defensively and the first half score is closer than expected. 24-10 at halftime.
Then the utes start to pull away in the second half.
Final score, 51-13.
