Pick a Salary Dump Trade

I think DA has been out in front of most things as a GM. Cashing in when he did was pretty smart as the mega-pick trades are likely all dried up now. So many teams pushed their chips into the middle.

So... with that said... I think the next trend with the new CBA is teams will be desperate to dump some salary as the restrictions coming are onerous and the cap penalties are tough. I think that is part of the reason DA cleared some cap room. Depending on what happens with Clarkson we will have 30-45M in cap space. I assume we pick up KO's option as I think that contract has some trade value. So I have a few cap dump trades rattling around my brain... put a poll around them to see which one gets the most approval.

Jazz out pick #28
Jazz in Oladipo and pick #18
Shaves 9.4M off the Heat books.. move up 10 spots for $10M. Puts us in range for several prospects that have zero chance of being there at 28.

Trade 2
Jazz out - KO & #28 pick
Jazz in - John Collins and #15 pick

Atlanta is effed. They need to deal with the Collins deal now or trade a guy they may like better like Bogey or Hunter. They held out a long time on Collins and his value may have only declined... This may end up costing them more than just a swap. Will take them out of the tax and clear the bottleneck. We could likely flip Collins for something else if we wanted to take dead salary... Atlanta needs a team with space to help them.

Jazz out - #28
Jazz in - #19 and Gary Payton 2 (2 years left on his deal $8M ish per year)

This one I'm okay with but would rather not have the extra year on Payton's deal. I think he's a solid useable player so its okayish salary.

Trade 4 - The three team slopfest

Utah out: KO, #28, Lakers 2027 pick
Utah In: Bertans, McGee, #10, #15

Atlanta Out: John Collins #15
Atlanta In: KO, #28

Dallas Out: #10, Bertans, Mcgee
Dallas In: John Collins, Lakers 2027 pick

We end up with 9, 10, 15, 16 in this years draft. I think we could only do something like this if the Jazz love the middle part of the draft and a wing/forward falls to #9. Maybe the love Grady and do something like Wallace, Dick at 9 and 10 and Miller, Bilal at 15-16.

Probably too good for Dallas so some massaging could be done.

We could do a combo of a couple of these deals... like do trade 1 with the Heat and then do a modified version of Trade 2 where we take the pick the Hawks own from Sacramento instead of a pick swap.

I also think if you can sneak up into the teens and get a pick then it might make a consolidation and move up trade more feasible with Orlando... so if you can get the #15, #18, #19 pick maybe you are more inclined to do 9/16 for #6. If you can land #15 can you stack that with something Dallas likes to move to #10. Would just love to get a wing/forward and Cason Wallace.

If you came out of the draft with Cason, Ausar, and John Collins... like **** man... I feel damn good about where we are and where we are going.

I'd probably be okay with most. However, what I'd be most interested in is parlaying current assets that the clock is about to run out on (the Philly pick) into something farther down the road. We've got a lot of picks that have good value in the future (or could, or at least are unprotected) but we don't have any picks that are first rounders but protected or lesser-value picks. When we make deals in the future, we're going to have to offload more valuable picks. We need to stock up on more disposable firsts to throw them into deals so we don't have to expend higher value picks in other deals. Next best thing, I suppose, is improving the pick this year, but I guess that would depend on what our plan with it was or if it allowed us to package it with 16 for someone we wanted.

tl;dr I'd like to restart the clock on a pick like the Philly pick. I think we get diminishing returns with three picks now and would rather use that as a bargaining piece in the future.

I don't think this is the year to trade a pick in the 20s. I think Indiana, Brooklyn, and the Hornets might have picks in that range for sale... I agree somewhat... depends on who we draft but Collins provides a couple things... if he improves his play then he is a candidate to flip later if the rookies are showing promise off the bench. We can do a deal that Atlanta might not since they are trying to win now and reduce salary. We could take back worse players and bad money and get.... thats right... more draft stuff. If the rookies struggle Collins provides a good player to help us keep winning.

He may create a logjam we don't want though. So I get it.

I think Atlanta is in a world of hurt and I disagree... but fine. Jalen Johnson emerging and playing well plus being $10M over the tax already right now... and with extensions for Murray and Okongwu for next year.... They are out of runway and dude has been on the market for literally years. They gonna settle.

GS would end up saving like $120M+ in the deal over 2 years. To move down 9 spots and move on from a guy that is like 8th or 9th on the depth chart. Maybe they find a taker for Poole but that contract looks real rough.

i like 2, but i also like collins and think he may have a poor man's lauriesque leap in him in the right situation with the right coach. and when i say poor man's lauriesque leap. i mean, all he does is regain his 2nd and 3rd year form where he gives you an ultra efficient 20+ ppg and 10 rpg and hardy gets him playing some defense. and having another mid-first at #15 in this draft where the mid first is the strength of the draft, would be very nice.

in Collins third season he averaged 22 and 10 on 66% TS. that is elite, all-star caliber production. not unreasonable to think a change of scenery can get him back to a place he has already been.

His defense is good... shockingly that isn't the problem. Its that his shot failed him and his role on Atlanta is to hang out in the corner. If his shot turns or he gets revived in a new role I could see his value popping back up.

exactly. he was a 40% 3pt shooter in his third season. change of coach, scheme, offense, it's not at all far fetched to think he could get back to that place.
