Players that could be had for Memo TPE

A similar way the TPE could be used is the deal that sent Maynor to OKC. In that deal, OKC didn't have a TPE, but they had the raw cap space to just absorb Harp and Maynor. We paid the price of Maynor to get rid of 8 million and salary (for something like a 13 million dollar savings considering the LT hits.)

The TPE can be used in the same way.

Everyone is fixated on what "good" player the Jazz could get. But what we actually have is 10 million dollars of "cap space" for sale. In other words, we can sell somebody up to 10 million dollars of cap space by absorbing an unwanted contract(s) (though they would almost certainly have to be expirings). In return for this, the other team would be obligated to come up with an attractive package of picks/young players. This is why the best use of the TPE (in some portion) would likely come in a 3 team deal (with the Jazz playing facilitator.)

It's impossible to forecast these scenarios. What's (95%) guaranteed is that A) the Jazz aren't looking to make a splash in FA next year and B) Somebody else will want to but need more cap space.

Or do something similar to what the Cavs did. Took on a bigger contract to get a draft pick.

Something like Nocioni and the Sixers unprotected first round pick for a second rounder.

I get that Billy and have been saying the same thing. The problem is I don't see a single scenario that actually benefits both teams, although 3 team trades are difficult to work. Who's your candidate team? What are your best ideas? If it's taking a Maynor type player along with an 8 million expiring then big whoop.

You only want homeruns for the TPE? If we didn't get the TPE, we would have been shooting for a late first for Memo. We were never likely to have a situation where somebody just gave us a star player free.

I said in another post, the TPE kills us if we were going to splurge this season in FA (and we really couldn't have anyway.) So having the TPE effectively increases the chances of getting value for Memo. Use of the TPE then has to be compared solely to what we might have got if we held on to him (a late first type value).

As a result, I'm not hoping or even thinking we'll fill it with a high dollar player. If we use it, we'll probably get a young player/pick. But if that player is better than a midseason trade for Memo, KOC wins.

What about the TPE for Maggette, with Kemba (and picks?) thrown in next summer? Charlotte then has loads of caps space to sign Dwight and Deron in the offseason (I haven't done all the math).

Not sure if anyone else is as big a Kemba fan as I am, but I'd love a deal like this. With Maggette expiring in 2013, any plan to sign free agents that offseason is completely unchanged.

Probably the most interesting name on the list you provided was Hedo. Not because I would want him or his contract anywhere near this team, but we all know whoever wants Dwight has to take back Hedo. And for all you who will no doubt clamor that why would we want Dwight for a 1 yr rental, well I'd rent him for a year and give up Al, CJ + GS pick to do it. I'd even throw in a Burks or a Hayward as well.

That would set back the rebuild three or four years. Giving up all that to have Howard for one year is ridiculous. You don't trade a solid vet, a potential high draft pick in one of the best drafts in a long time besides throwing in another young player (lottery) pick to rent Dwight Howard for 60 games. The Jazz will not win a championship with only Howard who is looking at the door so he can go play with DW.

You must be kidding.

Why?

If the Jazz aren't going to be active in free agency until 2013, they lose absolutely nothing with this deal and gain Kemba Walker.

If Dwight Howard isn't extend-and-traded, he'll be a free agent next summer, and if the Bobcats can clear Maggette, could have the money to lure in him plus one more big name free agent (Deron, for example).

Do you really think the Jazz are going to do better than Kemba Walker plus a 2013 expiring for the TPE? Or do you think Charlotte would be stupid to do this deal IF Howard+Deron is a real possibility?

Putting aside my disinterest in Walker, I can't see Deron and Dwight signing in Charlotte. With only a few moves, Dallas has the same cap space Charlotte does. If Orlando is foolish enough not to trade Howard this season, I see them both angling to play in Dallas. On paper, though, it's a good deal.
