Potential additions for next year at SF/PF, PF/C

The argument for Covington is obviously the defensive upgrade over Bogey. And we have defensive problems; big slip this year.

I don’t want to see Bogey traded, but we need to break into the next tier of teams NEXT YEAR and then hope that Max-Paid Donovan is a more legit lure to free agents.

Adding a guy like Torrey Craig could be a cheaper and easier option to support the defense. But they would need to move Conley to the bench, I think
Conley just has to go. If nothing else, he shouldn't be in the plans beyond next season.

Maybe I just see Covington as way too overhyped and can't appreciate him for what he actually is at this point. Bojan brings it in a big way on offense, but there's only one ball and the sharing of it in a general sense has been an issue this year, so I see him as a piece that can be moved for something that might fit better. I don't know if Covington is it, but I see your point.

I like RoCo but he went from under-rated to over-rated imo. I want to see if his shot disappears in the playoffs again.

I think with guys like that you want to get the next RoCo and hopefully not overpay to get the real version.

I am of the opinion one of two things needs to happen with Mike:

1- trade him for space(trade exception), spare parts, draft assets.
2- Bring him off the bench.

If there is no good deal bringing him off the bench allows us to be appropriately sized in our starting lineup, puts the ball in his hands, hopefully chills JC out a bit when his shot is crooked, and gives our second unit a solid volume creator. I'd say leave him with the starters but the size issue on defense is glaring. Put him on a second unit with JC, Brantley, Oni, and Bradley and I think we are pretty damn good off the bench. The main starting lineup was really good and that bench should be an advantage for us most nights.

Our front office has a sunk cost issue though... so we ride **** into the ground whether it is working or not.

I get your general drift here, but I do think Brantley has improved as a defender. And I think he’ll likely improve more.
He has surprised me a handful of times. Perfectly timing a drive so he is in position and blocks the shot and controls it. I also think folks have to understand how much stress our defensive system and personnel put on the center. Favs had bad on/off numbers when backing up Rudy a couple years before he figured things out.

I think right now he is a perfectly average backup 5... I think next year he could be slightly above average as a backup center. Not sure he will ever be more than that and I would love a 5 out center option. Locke has hinted that he think Jarrell could do it... might be correct in the right matchup.

We need to see Oni and Brantley in the playoffs... we need a bigger sample size. Otherwise I'm sure we sign some washed veteran to play over them for 25 games before giving them the full time job.

Not totally sure how we get there from here, but let's just imagine that our roster for next season has:

Guards: Conley, Mitchell, Clarkson, Kira Lewis (or Maledon, Tre Jones, Mannion, etc. -- insert whatever rookie you imagine we pick)
Wings/PF: Ingles, Bogdanovic, O'Neal, Niang, Kurucs, Oni, Brantley, Tucker
Bigs: Gobert, Favors, Bradley, Morgan

(One of these would have to be cut or on a two-way; I'll let you decide who)

Would you be optimistic or pessimistic for the season?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we bring Favors or Crowder back. In fact... I kind of expect it.

Crowder would be more likely for multiple reasons.

The Jazz will spend the MLE if they’re getting a starter/closer caliber player that they think seriously improves the team. IMO.

The issue is that such players are rarely had for the MLE or less. They’re probably as likely to find one that pops for less money.

I guess on Miami, but Pat also know he has good young bigs and it can be tough to move a bad deal. They also have to renounce guys to do it.

Toronto can't sign Wood without renounce all their free agents and Van Vleet is a better player than Wood... imo so are Gasol and Ibaka, but I get the long term value argument in favor of Wood.

I just think its a limited market and teams know they can likely get bigs cheaper than other positions. You might be right... NY might pony up. I get the feeling they go the other route and get more established guys.

Who knows where the dominos will fall... If I had to guess 4/50ish is what I'd guess.
Will be interesting for sure. I have him down as the most promising free agent this summer next to Van Vleet.

Without COVID, he gets at least Randle money ($18.5). With COVID, just hard to tell.
