Rookie Contract Power Rankings

Like ranking Cody over Collier is you just holding onto your completely made up idea of what Cody was from your draft takes when you convinced us he was going to be a taller SGA

Obviously the SGA thing for Cody was a loose comp and outlier outcome. Cody's supposed to be more like a 6'7" Latrell Sprewell, and that's after a few years of development. You can look up my posts on Cody in the draft thread. The Jazz also had Cody rated as a top-5 prospect, which is why they were happy to draft him where they did.

Teams are still going to value Cody over Isaiah at this stage, due to Cody's potential and his measurables. Collier has had some nice games over the past few weeks, but it's not enough to change his role or his outlook much in the bigger picture. The Jazz will happily draft a high-level lead guard in one of the next two drafts and make Collier a backup. Right now, the Jazz are trying to lose.

1. Kessler
2. Keyonte
3. Flip
4. Sensabaugh
5. Cody
6. Collier

Flip/Sens are close and interchangeable for me, everyone else is in exact order.

Update:

1. Kessler - obvious

2. Key - Likely NBA rotation player and better chances at being starter than anyone below.

This is where it gets hard.

I think Collier has the best chance of being a starter out of the remaining players, but I actually think Brice and Flip are more likely to be NBA rotation players. Collier has a bigger range and it's because he can't shoot at all. I love the kid, but he's playing in a situation that is both a little fake and also perfect for him. He gets to have the ball all the time and play next to good offensive players that don't necessarily need or want the ball a ton. He would have to make massive improvements to warrant having the ball in his hands in a situation less ideal. He has a narrow role for success and you need to be really good to have that role in the NBA making it somewhat boom or bust. Brice and Flip don't have the two way potential to be high impact players that Collier could potentially be, but they have an easier time fitting around better players. But for the potential alone and giving him a S/O for his recent play I'll move Collier up to 3.

3. Collier
4. Brice
5. Flip

It gets easy again here.

6. Cody

Maybe. The requirement for 6'3" guards is just awfully high. I could see Collier moving above Flip, but I just think teams are more likely to invest in the 7-footer with potential and workable touch. Like, what if Flip adds a solid 15 lbs, gets his 3pt shooting up 5% and figures out how to operate on an NBA floor. We're dealing with rookies, and future value is still largely based on development potential.

If Collier can show some in-between game, that would help too.
I mean, I really like Filipowski, but it's hard to see him as anything more than a nice backup vs Collier who has the tools to be a high level playmaker. It's easier to teach a guy how to shoot than it is how to play defense.

I really doubt Cody would get more than Collier on the open market at this point. Cody's lows are extremely low and his highs are basically non-existent vs Collier who has shown great highs.

Kessler
Keyonte
Collier
Hendrix
Brice
Flip
Cody

I talk a lot of **** about keyonte but still every time I watch him play his physical tools, athleticism, great looking shot, swagger, etc stand out.
I still believe in him even though his production/box scores often tell me I shouldn't

  1. Time for an update:

    1. Walker Kessler
      • Not only has he been the best rookie contract player, there's an argument he's been our best player this year. I've noticed him doing a bit more daring things on offense, like using his body to bump people to go up strong, and even last night he attempted a dribble drive when he was being overplayed.
    2. Isaiah Collier
      • Has been a revelation since January. Has great vision and a high level combination of strength/speed. Shooting/Scoring is still a huge question mark that might hold him back from realizing his potential, but I'm very intrigued and he's been fun to watch. I would probably bet on Keyonte over Collier, but Collier has more upside if he can fix his weaknesses.
    3. Keyonte George
      • Has his ups and downs, but I still believe in his ability. His passing has been great. His shooting is still hit/miss, and I continue to be disappointed by his ability to finish drives and just overall generate easy scoring opportunities for himself. I do think Keyonte could benefit from bulking back up a bit after the massive weight loss he had from his Baylor year to his rookie year.
    4. Kyle Filipowski
      • Kind of a toss up between him and Brice, but Flip's passing ability is such a joy to watch. He can't defend anyone currently. Still seems to lack the confidence he had after the early season breakout.
    5. Brice Sensabaugh
      • He shoots it well but doesnt really do anything else that gets me excited. Still think Juzang is the better overall player/prospect. Wouldnt mind trading Brice if there is someone out there who really liked him in the draft, but was worried about the knee and now sees him healthy/shooting well and wants in.
    6. Cody Williams
      • A true tank commander. Get well soon Captain.
Pretty much the same, but I would probably flip Sensabaugh/Cody since Cody has shown a bit more lately and I still continue to not really believe in what Brice does.

Obvious

1. Kessler

2. Keyonte - Likely a 6th man, has potential to be more

Likely players role players

3. Collier - Higher potential, but kind of hard to find him a role if he can't shoot/must dominate the ball.
4. Flip - Lower potential than Collier, but fits into more situations

Fighting for career

5. Cody - Been playing better, needs to have a higher motor in order to survive
6. Brice - Awful BBIQ, but he can shoot and score

Kessler
.
.
.
Collier - has an elite NBA skill, speed, and passing is near elite and could become so
Flip - his numbers looking so good so soon is very promising
Key - has to bring his D out of league basement to move up this list
Cody - keeps showing flashes- has potential to be a starter and could be an elite defensive player with more mass/muscle
Brice - has one NBA skill in shooting- needs to listen to his coach and expand his game

IMO - people are a tad too enamored with Collier around here. Would love to be proven wrong long-term and will happily eat crow if so.

The assist #’s and his ability to get to the rim / create for others jump off the screen. But I’ll wait until the shooting improves to at least a respectable level to declare him a franchise cornerstone.

Fortunately he’s super young, and people do learn how to shoot in the NBA. KD was < 30% from 3 his rookie year (granted he was butter from deep his whole life before that).

IMO:

Kessler - good enough to be a franchise cornerstone unless we trade him in a blockbuster deal

Filipowski (heavy recency bias here)
Keyonte
Collier

Brice

Everyone else

1. Kessler

2. Flip (definitely recency bias, but he just has too many intangibles for me not to be high on. The size, the passing, the shooting, the efficiency. He needs to learn his spots and I don't think he'll ever be a plus defender, but the above combination just can't be taught)

3. Collier (great vision and speed, his shooting is still concerning for me)
4. Keyonte (flashes of brilliance and his body language is better since going to the bench, but still not fully bought in)

5. Cody (definitely has some flashes. This off-season will be big for my perception, I just need to see some fire/work ethic)

6. Brice (I've just never been a believer. He is a fantastic shooter, but I just don't think it is enough to fill his many other gaps besides being a 10th man backup energy plus)

I'd honestly consider Juzang and KJ Martin as more intriguing pieces than Brice for me, and I'd throw both of them into any trade to get it over the line and not even think twice about it

Ageee with your whole take

I think Flip/Keyonte/Collier are essentially in a 3-way tie. Each have a glaring weakness that has to be improved on for them to be legitimate NBA rotation players on a playoff team.
