SI picks Utes to win PAC12 South.

It's all about the Benjamins. BYU was tired of sharing so much money with the dregs of the WAC and then the MWC. And their alumni and fans outside of Utah were tired of not being able to see any games once the broadcast rights went to Versus or the Mtn, or whatever the $%#@ the name of the network was.

IF BYU had been able to get a sweet deal like Utah, they certainly would have joined a conference. Since they were asked about the Big 12 before A&M officially stated that they were exploring other options, it would have been inappropriate to express interest. I agree with jazzman12...the 16 team superconferences are on the way. Make it two divisions of 8 teams each in each conference and you're down to 4 teams playing for a national championship after the conference title games are completed. That would be just two additional games.
 
Just now while waiting at the pharmacy I had the chance to peruse 3 college sports periodicals and all three (Lindy, Steele & Athlon) had Utah picked 3rd in the South behind ASU and USC. One, Athlon I believe, had Utah and UCLA tied in the 3rd slot.

And since USC is not eligible, they really had Utah picked second in the south. So SI wasn't that different from anyone else.

There's a difference between being picked first because you are indeed the best as opposed to being picked 3rd but because the better team is ineligible you get to move up a spot. You may get to occupy the 2nd spot when all is said and done but you're still only the 3rd best team.

Also, regarding the grand scheme of things in the PAC-12 I think 5th overall was the best ranking that the Utes received. OU, OSU, ASU and USC were all picked over the Utes. I know, I know. That would translate into 4th because USC is ineligible. Clearly.

Being second to USC or flat out winning the south is no different. Either way, the Utes end up in the Pac 12 championship game. I don't care about your hate. Plenty of teams have won the superbowl but didn't finish the season as the #1 seed. I expect Utah to finish ahead of USC anyway, but your argument is not concerning to me.

I can see it's really going to hurt BYU fans when Utah is in the Pac 12 championship game while BYU is preparing for the nobody cares bowl.

LOL!!!!

Utah has a way better chance of being in a BCS bowl than BYU. All Utah has to do is win the Pac 12 championship game (could even lose that game and still play in a BCS game). BYU has to go undefeated.

I don't have their schedule in front of me but if they win there first 3 games the hype machine will be churnin' for that. I think after those they also have TCU and Oregon St and I know TCU has been good but they have A LOT of turnover so while they may not be bad not sure how good they'll actually be and according to Duck the U is full of suck and Oregon St. is generally picked to finish below the U. As well as Miss St. lost it's starting QB and is generally one of the weaker SEC and Texas is a young but improving team so I guess they picked a good time to play these bigger named schools.

Yeah BYU has an easy schedule, no doubt. None the less, they need to go undefeated to play in a BCS bowl. And even then, they will have trouble passing Boise State.

You can bet they will lose to Utah, possibly lose to TCU, and might lose to Texas.

Utah, on the other hand, doesn't have to worry about any of that. If they win the Pac 12 Championship game, they are in the Rose Bowl. And if they lose the Pac 12 Championship game, they still go to the Rose Bowl if the Pac 12 Champion is in the national championship game (which is not a far fetched scenario at all).
