The Non-Jazz NBA Thread in the Jazz Section

Just so everyone knows, the Hawks are gonna trade Daniels, the better of Milwaukee/New Orleans pick they got from New Orleans, and stuff for Giannis. Trae/Giannis/Zingis coming down the pike.
Doubt Giannis is giving Atlanta the OK that he's going to sign long term there to play with Trae.

I mean, they complement each other better than almost any duo I can think of. Would be madness.

I should also clarify, this would happen midseason so the Bucks could tank their asses off. Also, the Pelicans are for sure not making the playoffs and I still can’t believe the Queen trade. One of the worst in my lifetime.

Didn't really work with Lillard and he, on paper, fit better with Giannis.

It's just pretty widely known players aren't thrilled to play with Tre

I quoted a convo from Locke. I think its logical to think the negotiations were like 15-35M to start then would move to a more reasonable 20-30M range. Walker didn't hold out though. Jazz just said "we gotta preserve our precious cap space, so $20M or nah? We will get you 28-30M next summer for sure."

I heard somewhere that the Jazz were 50M apart... that could have been 20-30M or 25-35M though... so who knows.

This is what I was remembering. $25M as the midpoint and $20-30M as the deal zone makes a lot of sense. If the Jazz are really at $25M and Kessler is at $30M they should be able to bridge that gap....but I actually think it's more like $20M and $30M and they just need to meet in the middle at $25M. Many ways that can make $30M feel the same to the Jazz as $25M with incentives, front loading, options/NG etc.

$15M is just a ridiculous starting point. I know that reflects his cap hold but that seems like a disrespectful number.

Right. I did hear from someone on X that said they heard at one point that they wanted north of 5/150M.

So I think it could have gone like this:

Walker - Lets talk extension.
Jazz - We gotta keep cap space but we will do 15M.
Walker - death stare
Jazz - silence
Walker - How about 35M then!
Jazz - Well we would have come up to 20M but lets just talk next summer.
Walker - Frustratedly looks up Luka passing highlights and then checks real estate in LA on Zillow.

Like if the Jazz really did want space next summer... you could start Walker at 20M, give max raises, and give him a PO for year 5. Would work out to 4/90 or 5/117M and he gets the added benefit of the 27M PO if things don't work out... or gets on the market earlier and really cashes in.

If you really need $5M in flexibility... go ahead and decline the Cody Williams option.

Tre seems to be growing up. Also, Lillard isn’t a fraction of the place-setter that Trae is. He was also past his prime.

Sounds like Tari Eason isn't getting extended. So there is a name we can throw some money at I guess.

The FA list next year:

Trae Young - Player option
Tari Eason
Benny Mathurin
Ivey
Duren
Austin Reaves
Coby White

Then a bunch of guys like:
Keon Ellis
Quentin Grimes
Ayo Dosunmu
Sexton and Collins

IDK not a market I'm super excited to try and get someone for 45M instead of the 30M we would have had.

I think it would be funny as double H E hockey sticks if we brought Collins and Sexton back.

Dont think Giannis works well with a "place setter" (at least it's not optimal if the tradeoff is a terrible defender). You want defense and shooting around him.

Mark Williams also a RFA. I know he has health concerns, but still a very good center option for teams who need someone.
