I bring this up because lately I’ve been reading the book called, “Entertaining ourselves to Death” which I've found you be extremely relevant for today. We are so eager to be entertained rather than informed that we’ve elected a damn reality tv star to be our president. Ask most Americans the last non-fiction book they’ve read and you might wait minutes for them to respond. Then ask them about the last reality tv show they just watched and you’ll probably get an endless burst of conversation about Tiger King. And I’m not exempt to this. I waste way too much time on entertainment than on stuff that matters.

Karen Stenner talks about why authoritarianism is popping up all over liberal democracies and why. Her research shows that 1/3rd of people are predisposed to authoritarian tendencies. It is the job of the other 2/3rd to either outvote these people or help them to feel comfortable in wanted or else the 1/3rd will wreck democracy. While I’m still wondering how to bring a sense of community to America in 2020, I do know how to outvote people. Which is what Democrats must do from now until the fall. Mobilize as many Democrats and independents as possible to outvote the MAGA crowd. We might not win them over this year (they might be gone to the Trump cult forever) but we sure as hell can outvote them. In the long term, we need to bring a sense of community and equality back to our towns and cities or our democracy might be lost.
