What's new

This made me kinda sad today...

It’s all situational. There is no answer that will always be the best response. Some times walk away, sometimes stabs your ground and sometimes step up and forward vocally. And physically if needed.
It was actually rather funny in the twitter thread Thriller linked.

Tl;dr "yeah the Black Hebrews do these aggressive and offensive things.... it's just what they do" but then goes on to really emphasize that people should walk away. I won't bother pointing anything out about this because it should be self-evident.

Agree. Yet here we are analyzing whether or not a young man handled this particular situation the way we would have with the luxury of hindsight and video replay. It’s laughable.

Aren't you aware that the world's evils turn on this axis?

So I want to educate my children as to the perfect thing to do in this case and looking for advice please. Should I tell them to;
- walk it back, take the high road by giving ground... every time in life when someone steps to you?
- stand there with a “smug” look on your face while simply standing your ground?
- stand there with a worried look to show humility?
- give the instigator a much-needed hug?
- sit on the ground “Indian-style” to show respect for the indigenous peoples and hope others don’t take it the “wrong” way?

I don't know what advice to give to your children so they can ignore. But in this case, Chad (don't know the kid's name, so I'll call him Chad, Incel style), could've either walked away or stood his ground the way he did. Either is fine.

What's actually funny, is that most "leftists" on the forum admitted they were mistaken in their judgement as soon as they saw the full vid. I look forward to the next time NPCD argues a point to death regardless of the evidence. Which happens on weekly basis.

No, you shouldn’t walk away from racist, bigoted and homophonic slurs. And dismissing it as “that’s just what they do” is pathetic. I’m fine with them holding their ground

Of the three "leftists" I see posting, two have admitted they were mistaken. One doesn't really care and is more invested in the narrative. But, to Hack's credit, he actually was on the first page assuming this was true and not condoning it to begin with before changing realizing it was much ado about nothing.

I dont condone this. They dont represent my views. It is ugly what they are doing.

First, I feel I made a mistake in both judgement and interpretation where this event was concerned. Here is CNN's updated account of what happened. It sounds like an accurate account, now that I've seen a lot more then just the under 4 minute clip that started the whole wave of outrage:

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/21/us/maga-hat-teens-native-american-second-video/index.html

Second, I've either listened to or read about 5 interviews of Nathan Phillips. In the interview in the immediate aftermath, I found his raw emotion to be sincere. I don't think he was lying at all. He claimed to be scared. Was his fear justified based on the reactions of the students to his presence? I'm not in his skin, but I thought he gave his honest impression. As he walked forward, the kids parted a bit, until Phillips encountered Nick Sandmann, who simply stood his ground smiling.

Here is the complete statement by Nick Sandmann. It's worth a read. I find it impressive. I find it credible, believable, sincere. And that causes some self reflection on my part. Sandman states his smile was really just to disarm Phillips, to show him he had no intention of escalating a potential ugly encounter. Yet in the short clip that launched the outrage, I saw that smile as smug arrogance. So maybe it's me, seeing what I want to see. What I saw as smug arrogance could instead be seen as a calm, disarming smile:

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/20/us/covington-kentucky-student-statement/index.html

So what did I see? A bunch of MAGA hatters harassing a Native American elder. Looking at the kids again, in that short clip, some might have actually been getting into the chanting. Some might have been caught up by the chanting. Not so hard. I've been to many powwows, I enjoy the chanting and dancing. Some of the kids may have been laughing at and mocking Nathan Phillips. That could very well be, and likely was, the case. But they're kids, and I've already made mistakes. No harm was done. I believe Phillips emotions were genuine, but these kids were exposed to insults and taunts from the black Israelites. Maybe the kids should have walked away then and there. But they didn't, they responded to the black Israelites, who, btw, were verbally assaulting the indigenous group, as well as the students.

The lesson for me. I saw what I wanted to see. Or, maybe to cut myself more slack, I saw what fulfilled my expectations. I expected a group of MAGA hatters to harass minorities. So that's what I saw.

I don't know to what degree the media is at fault here. They went with that short clip. But, they did take a deeper look, and revised their analysis. They acted to correct the record.

I think, in part, the incident exposed what hyper partisanship can do. I don't want to make more mistakes in judgement and interpretation, as I feel I did here. I've got to be more careful. I will never renounce my opposition to everything Trump stands for, but I've got to let what happened here be a lesson for me.

Edit: some might find this Washington Post article illuminating:

Thank you Red. This sort of contrition is awesome to hear. It shows your willingness to be fair.

However, I still disagree with how the media is handling things. You linked the updated versions of CNN and the Washington Post. No where in there do they tell the full story or show a clip of Nathan Phillips walking up to the kid. I find that to be disingenuous and problematic. They did nothing to defuse the anger built up in the left. All you need to do is read the comments on the Washington Post and people still want blood.

I do not find Nathan Phillips to be genuine. His interview does match up with what the video shows. His exact word were "this young man put himself in front of me". That is a complete lie, and its an important lie because it changes how people view things. Niether CNN, Washington Post, or any other leftist media corrects this. He also claimed he was scared? How does that make any sense? He was the one who put himself in that situation. He is the one who was looking for the stare down. He is the one who got right up into the kids face banging a drum. That is not a scared man. That is an instigator looking for trouble. Secondly, not one of these kids did anything to make him feel scared. They didnt say anything hateful. They didnt touch him. There werent chants of build that wall. They smiled and danced to his song. His whole CNN interview was complete BS.

The only thing these kids did wrong was wear MAGA hats. That is it. Plain and simple. This just shows that this event was microscopic example of a bigger picture of what is going on in this country. If you wear a MAGA hat, support Trump, are a white Christian, a male, etc.. It has become ok by the left to hate and attack these people regardless of what they have done or said. Thats the truth. You said it yourself. You automatically assumed they were racist and up to no good because you saw the hats. This flies in the face of what the left pretends to stand for. This is being prejudice. Its literally the exact definition. If this doesnt get people to pause and self examine I dont know what will. Its disturbing to say the least.

Political hate is the new “it” thing. And it’s sad and shameful.

I think the most simplistic way to view it is that there has been a really big push for a number of years to be about principles, but those loudly advocating for principles aren't actually standing for principles, but are standing for the application, yet there's been a huge conflation between the application and the principle.

This bothered me.

“1:17:26 Hebrews speak truth: "Your college degrees was paid off of the blood shed from slavery. Your houses, your mortgages--everything that your parents own--was given to you by the blood shed by our people." White boy yells: “That’s racist, bro!” Um...no. That is truth. 23/“

Um, no, that’s not truth. That’s ****ed up.

Yeah I don’t agree with that.

I think the added context of the African American protest group and the inflammatory rhetoric they used sheds new light on this issue. Calling those students racist slurs and claiming that they’d harvest the one black student’s organs is inexcusable. If anything, those people were the ones who instigated it and deserve the most criticism now that more information has been added.

I do think this opens the door for an interesting discussion:

1. What is an all boys school doing at a pro life rally? Do we seriously not see the irony here?

2. What role do MAGA hats have in provoking reaction? I know of many people who consider them to be the new hood. You don’t wear that around DC without expecting a fight. What role did the students chanting and ripping off their shirts doing the HAKA have in this?

3. Where were the adults? This whole dispute didn’t just suddenly occur. It went on for minutes and minutes. Where were the chaperones? You’re going to let students from your school tear off clothes and do the Haka in front of the Lincoln memorial while exchanging racist rhetoric with African Americans and Native American Indians?

I admittedly have more empathy for smirking student kid and less for the adult chaperones now that I’ve seen the other videos. He was in a large group and when the Native American came up to him he saw it as a challenge and when surrounded by his peers he acted like most young men will act. But had adults been there this whole incident could’ve been descalated.

What is a leftist? Could you define it for me? I see this term written a lot online but I have no idea what it means. How does one qualify to be a leftist? Genuinely curious
