Just consider what we know, and the events of this week.
--The New York Times reports that Trump was briefed, at least 4 top intelligence chiefs present, on the actions Putin personally ordered to interfer in the 2016 election, in order to help Trump get elected. Trump is reported to have "grudgingly" accepted the facts of that interference.
--Despite that fact, over next 18 months, on repeated occasions, Trump has cast doubt on whether the Russians interfered in the election, and he has called the investigation into that interference, and more times then any of us can count at this point, "a witch hunt". Again, having been presented with the truth, in detail, prior to his inauguration. Yet he has repeatedly called the facts and the investigation into doubt.
--On the world stage, on foreign soil, with the man he was told ordered an attack on American democracy standing to his side, at the conclusion of a week spent bashing our allies of the last 70 years, and treating leaders of those allies as if they were our enemies, calling the European Union our "foe", the president chooses to betray his country, backs Putin's denials over his own intelligence agencies, again, on foreign soil mind you, again refers to the investigation into the attack on our democracy, by the man standing next to him, as a witch hunt. Bringing shame on himself and his office, providing aid and comfort to the enemy.
--After a couple of days spent providing the dumbest and most asinine walk back of his Helsinki comments many of us could ever imagine, his White House announces that the man who attacked our democracy has been invited to Washington. So, should we expect to see our enemy speak before a joint session of Congress? We are in the twilight zone at this point. Donald Trump is colluding with our chief adversary right in front of our eyes. George Will, our leading conservative advocate, sucessor to William Buckley, has, in his latest Washington Post column, himself called out Trump for committing collusion right now. We are in the twilight zone at this point.
--He's doubling down on his support of the man who ordered an attack on our democracy, an attack on our sovereignty. He is doubling down now, the asinine walk back is over, and he is back providing aid and comfort to the nation that attacked us. I don't expect Trump cult members to recognize this. They are the sheep. They are the fools. They are the Americans supporting a president who is betraying their nation. Shame on him. Shame on them...
