But let's just say the U.S. dissolved and there were factions within that claimed regional authority. Wouldn't the Baptists want their own, and the Evangelicals, and for sure the Mormons would claim a nice chunk out this way, then the Catholics in the north-east, some pockets of Jews, I don't know if JWs are concentrated enough in any specific place, Amish, etc.. I mean, whatever authority that could be found would be asserting it's own sovereignty, right?

If America dissolved and it was wars and chaos everywhere? sure. Groups would try to rise in power and carve out their own territory. For a lot of reasons. Like survival and stability.

Like the Mormon church in the mountain west or baptists in the south.

But America isn't like that. At least not right now. Also the gov isn't alienating them through force and death. Like when Hussein gassed the Kurds or the current fighting with Turkey and Shi'ite and Sunni groups.

There is a book series about this. Author's last name is Sterling. One of his books is The Subrise Lands. The series starts well enough but turns to crap in the last couple of novels.

Let's say the Mormons spoke their own language(Mormish), they had been living under near constant threat of extermination from both the government and their neighbors. They took up arms and secured the area which they lived in order to be to be able to live outside that threat(granted with the help of a no-fly zone). Over a period of 25 years they developed internal institutions and established foreign relations worldwide and in their own neighborhood. Let's say that while not perfect they had more tolerant policies and much less violence than the surrounding people in America. So in all this chaos you have a unique community with it's own language and heritage that seems to be building something that resembles a functioning modern state. Yeah, I think you may recognize them as a legitimate state.

The Kurds in Iraq have earned it to a much greater degree than recently recognized independent nations. If it weren't for Turkey being in NATO we would have recognized Kurdistan as an independent state already.
 
Maybe I'm nuts but I think that sooner or later Turkey decides that it wants to be the Germany of the middle east. They start a project similar to the European Economic Community(First step to the EU)and decide that they want Iraqi and Syrian Kurdistan to be a part of it. Turkey recognizes them both as independent nations or perhaps one on the condition that they recognize Turkey's territorial sovereignty.

PYD is PKK 's structure in Syria. I know u guys see them as freedom fighters but they are called terrorists in Turkey.The dudes in Mousul are Barzani's militias. Those sides don't like each other much lately. Oil and politics..
