Shaq the dark horse candidate to close.

He could be a rich man’s Royce. And he is CRITICAL to most of the Jazz’s most functional lineups.
Yeah, I do think he's got more offensive versatility to be a better option than Royce (not that they're mutually exclusive). I think people forget that outside of hitting a respectable percentage of fairly limited three point attempts, Royce really doesn't contribute anything offensively. 7.9 points per 36. Now I get that he doesn't necessarily need to and that he's a low usage guy, but having at least average offensive capabilities goes a long way. We say Shaq isn't skilled offensively, but only because he hasn't shown to be a great three point shooter. Take the three point shooting out of the equation and Shaq is quite well ahead of Royce on offense.

My preference to close would be our best lineup from last season, DM/Ingles/Bogey/Royce/Rudy. If Conley closes (which I suspect he will) I would probably go with Royce over Joe because Joe just doesn't play well when he shares the court with Conley. In certain matchups we might be able to close with Favors, especially against big teams like the Lakers.

Royce also passes up many open shots especially in the playoffs. Royce isn't a great guard or even wing defender though. He's better at guarding stronger players, hustling, and team defense. We really need someone better to guard wings. Hopefully he or Oni can be that guy and contribute on the other end. Even if on offense its just hitting open shots confidently and moving without the ball to try to get open for 3s and inside easy shots.

Shaq was was very bad offensively when he had a real role on a team. Whether it’s Royce, Oni, or Shaq, I think their best contribution is doing nothing so the more selfish players can be satisfied. Don’t think they’ll ever be a situation where there aren’t significantly better offensive players on the floor who we’ll want to run things through. We’ll see how his shooting is this year. It’s been bad at every level. College, G-League, NBA...it’s all been really bad.
