What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Crowder for Bjelica

I can't get over the fact that Crowder shot 6.5 threes per game this season. We need a PF that can hit on a consistent basis. In my family we joke that Crowder hits shots every third game, and that's why he shoots 33%.

Bjelica is very inconsistent player himself. He started the season blazing hot and so did his Kings, but then he hit a cold streak and so did the team's results and they missed the postseason. Bjelica isn't that great either.

Big picture, the nucleus of the team is still DM and Rudy. Ingles isn't "untouchable" but he should stay, we also wouldn't get great return for him in a trade.

3 glaring needs are as follows:

1) Upgrade at PG - Need a guy who can shoot and is going to handle bulk of PG duties, DM is better off the ball
2) Stretch/scoring 4 - Self-explanatory
3) General shooting across the floor

The PG is non-negotiable. Our PG rotation of Rubio (woof), Neto (permanently injured) and Exum (sigh) is untenable. Don't care if it's trade or free agency, DL needs to find a veteran immediately. I know George Hill had his own issues in '16 - '17 (he's certainly not the answer now), but when he was healthy, he was a high-caliber PG and made us a completely different team. The same quality of play at that spot next to DM with this group makes us a top 3 team in the West.

The PF spot is more interesting. Outside of Tobias I can't pinpoint who an ideal stretch 4 target would be. The Favors thing tough - he's had an awesome year and is a Jazz man through and through, but $18M is a lot to pay a big who can't play next to Rudy in the playoffs. In an ideal world, we pick up his option and move on from Crowder with an upgraded stretch big, but I doubt that's realistic.

Good post. I agree with most of what you are saying. I wish we could extend Favors at a lower number so we can just keep Crowder and Favors. I think they would both be great for depth if they cost $20 combined instead of $25+.

Hate Rubio's guts? Not at all. He seems to be a great guy.
I hate what he does to us offensively and defensively though.

I like how we almost always win when he doesn't play

As for a lineup. Take out Rubio and add in a guy who can shoot.
That was simple

Meh, He's got positive +/- rating on the season and even that was skewed by that easy schedule winning streak mid season that he missed injured.
(I'm sure you have no idea what I'm talking about since you don't even know where look up such info).

Also you don't have to play Rubio all the time, you can substitute him for a shooter during a game. He still carries value to a team as a playmaker. That's why he started on a 50 win team, whether you like it or hate it.

One scenario I could see...

If Memphis had it their way, they would end up outside the top 8. If that happens, they give their pick to Boston and they get to keep their upcoming picks. I think they go into tank mode which means Conley will be traded.

So Favors, Exum and #23 for Conley. We are still able to keep Rubio too if we want. This is the lineup I would go with in that scenario:

Conley, Rubio, Neto
Mitchell, Grayson
O'Neale, Korver
Ingles, Crowder, Niang
Gobert, Bradley

I think Ingles can play PF. O'Neale too. Crowder can, and Niang is improving. That new starting group features one of the best shooting lineups in the entire league.

Lol. He started on many non 50 win teams
He started on many lottery teams.
His plus minus gets skewed by playing with Ingles, Rudy, and DM for most of his minutes

I bet most jazz players have a positive plus minus. Wonder what Royce's plus minus was in the games he started in place of Rubio? Neto when starting for Rubio?

I watch the games. I see how the defense defends Rubio. I see what effect that has on the offense.

Offensive win shares Rubio is dead last amongst our starters.
Defensive win shares Rubio is dead last amongst our starters.
VORP Rubio is dead last amongst our starters.

None of this is surprising btw

1.Try to trade Exum: Exum + 1st 2019 jazz + swap rights 1st round 2020 x Louis Williams + Thornwell.
2. Forget top free agents wasting time.
3. Dedmon as reserve center.
4. Favors team option too expensive, dont execute it.
5. Look for cheap PF with goog 3p%. Wilson Chandler for example, or better.
6. Resign Ricky Rubio. A short contract, 1+1 type.
7.Gobert must waste his summer throwing threes. If our primary play is a Mitchell iso, like Anteto-Bucks, our center must stay outside the rim. All top centers in the league shot threes, Gobert no.

I was with you up until the part about keeping Rubio and changing everything that is great about gobert.
