What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

... Does the team need to be upgraded, yes, but only minor ones...
My humble opinion is this team needs much more than minor upgrades. Defensive motto and money ball has already taken Utah all the factible way. There's no way to overcome lack of athleticism and offensive liabilities on this roster. It is what it is. I'm not sure Lindsey's got the assets needed to get something serious done this offseason. Barring very unusual circumstances I tend to think Lindsey, sooner or later, will have to give up on this Jazz version...

I think Mirotic is about to get exposed in this series and the next if they can make it that far. On offense, he's going to end up looking like a bigger version of Korver or Ingles. He will be a massive liability on the switch like Korver and his shooting will be snuffed out by lock down defenders.

If he can't shine this playoffs next to Giannis and Middelton, I have no reason to believe he is the answer next to Donovan. We need somebody more dynamic.

IDK if guys are focused on snuffing out Niko and Ingles outside the 3 point line then driving and diving lanes are open for DM and Rudy. I don't think he is the type of guy that will be played off the floor in the playoffs. He was fine against the warriors last year and was pretty great against the blazers. If he struggles I'd chalk it up to new system, teammates, and reduced role... I mean he went 13 and 4 in 20 minutes in the first game on nine shots. That kind of production would have been heaven sent in our series with Houston.

There is some low hanging fruit that could help us bump up a few wins, but the big next step is much harder and will require a fairly significant talent infusion... either in a couple spots or in the form of one really high end talented guy.

Ultimately though... this team will go as far as DM can take them. His ceiling is the biggest determining factor in this team's ceiling at this time.

I'm just going to choose to hope that this disappointing season will give Lindsey the nuts to finally make a god damn move because anyone that's been serious and not had their head up their asses have known that the composition of this roster has been fatally flawed for two seasons.

You make it sound like we're a bunch of scrubs. Fatally flawed no. Flawed yes.

I like Ingles but he´s not a playoff player. If you get an Ariza type of player and the rest you write for me could be a ring. I appreciate that people is starting to think that maybe Rudy is not the cornerstone for a championship winning team. I like Rudy but he can´t create his own shot and if you call him a star (nowadays) this star must create his own shot. It´s hard because you all love it ( as i like Ricky, but i know what he is) but from my point of view that´s a fact.

Oh my good hell.

You people have lost your ****ing minds.

If the goal is winning a championship, the roster composition of this team is absolutely fatally flawed.

-exceptionally poor spacing for a good team
-abject lack of bucket-getters that you need in the playoffs

OK. So every team not called the Warriors is fatally flawed? The hell logic is that?

If we would have shot our season average, we would have won that series. We choked. We missed open shots.

That's not on DL or Quin. It's on the players.

This is a team that’s been known to not infrequently go for stretches of 6-8 minutes without a field goal. It’s a team that can look unstoppable when a couple guys are lighting it up, but who otherwise shoot less than 32% from deep. It’s a team that has exactly one offensive option and another guy who can really make things click. You don’t win or lose games, let alone a series, by one fluke here or there — games, and especially a playoff series, are amalgams of many different variables that have a tendency to average out over time. We shot poorly? Wonderful. We also held Harden to some pretty ridiculously low shooting averages and point totals. Any pro or con is balanced out by other pros and cons. The ultimate total generally comes out to closely approximate the true ability of a team.

So, of the players, coaches, and GM trio of blame, I certainly place much more of it on one of those parties than the other two.

Winning a championship is not my strict litmus, being able to reasonably believe in the possibility is. This team isn't and wasn't ever very close.

And if it's "on the players" you are suggesting what, exactly? Seems like the same solution whether it's the GM or the players, to me; get better fits and better players.

You can lean on what-ifs all night long, the Jazz got virtually swept.

If I'm Dennis, the answer is, I do very little. And why should I? What's my motivation?
The win total for the team has increased every season. Ticket prices were recently increased, IIRC. And I'm sure Mitchell has resulted in merchandise sales going through the roof.

So why should Dennis do anything even remotely risky? There is very little upside if he makes major moves in the hopes Utah wins 55-60 games and contends for a title. Utah is a franchise where being "good enough" has been "good enough" for 35 years. Dennis has done a terrific job of maximizing profits by keeping payroll dollars low. Operating in the black was always important to the Millers and for a BoD, it would be no different.

The downside risk is much higher for Dennis if he makes a major move that doesn't work, including job loss if he really screws it up. So if I'm Dennis, I just keep playing it safe as much as possible. The usual dog and pony show run by Perrin of bringing in 70 or so prospects. A "safe" draft pick. Pretending to kick the tires by calling the handful of agents (along with my assistant) representing the second and third-tier FA's (just so I can "show work" to Pres. Starks and the board). Pick up Derrick's option. Make Rubio an offer, but don't really care if he turns it down since the wind seems to be blowing in the direction of the fans wanting a different PG. If he leaves? Simple. I go out and sign the best FA out there who will take $5-$6M. And then I promote Naz, Cavanaugh or one of the other Stars' players to take the last roster spot.

And to the fans...I again sell the concept of connectivity and internal development. And recycle the tried and trite phrase of looking at every means possible to improve the team, but free agents were overvalued relative to their contribution and we really like the guys we have.

My name is Dennis Lindsey and I have this GM job for as long as I can keep the Jazz in the playoffs.
