STAYWARD

Let me be clear about something, I do not miss tanking. I don't miss advocating for tanking or talking about it as a sensible strategy. I don't want to do it. But there is a point where it is the more sensible path.

I really hope Hayward stays and we watch one of the most competitive (infra-conference) seasons any of us have ever seen. Especially since I think the Jazz have another move left.

Not from Hayward(obviously) or the Jazz, but I'm going to have to say this guy doesn't know ****.
He's a producer on 1280 the zone (jazz-owned station) and has always seemed pretty sharp to me when he comes on air. He very possibly has some inside connections. I'm wondering if maybe he heard something from one of the coaches or players who were at the meeting with Hayward today.

Can somebody tell me why I shouldn't be worried the he has to sleep on it. I feel like if he wanted to be here the decision would be an easy one. Please tell me I'm overthinking this or missing something...
I'm the same way. No matter how obvious the choice is, if it's a big decision I'm going to sleep on it. Don't be worried.

Jazz are in the West. Just not signing anyone to replace Hayward they could drop to 11th in the conference just with all the other teams that will compete. Sac, Phoenix and LAL the 3 lowest. The rest all have legitimate chance to make the playoffs. Trade Favors and JJ and get a young PF in their place.

I don't see the Jazz doing this, but it is possible.

I think people are highly overrating some of these western teams. While there's absolutely an arms race right now, I'm pretty sure that some of these big moves are going to fall flat.

I agree.

GSW- Going to be demolished by the tax repeater penalty over the next few years.
SAS- Aging. Kawhi is the only major piece that is young.
HOU- CP3 is aging and is a free agent next year. Does the Harden/CP3 expiriment work?
OKC- Westbrook AND PG13 can be FA's next year. Will they stay?

I'm willing to bet multiple western conference teams drop off within a few years. Hayward should take that into consideration.

There's another possibility here, which is that Gordon has made up his mind, has given someone a commitment, and has given the team his blessing on a proposed trade. That trade is now being carried out in the next 24 hours before Hayward announces his decision publicly. If Utah is that team, the Jazz may be asking Hayward to keep quiet for another day or so while they pull the trigger on the deal. Completing that deal might also hold sway with Hayward.

The fact that no one is saying anything, that there's a complete blackout from Jazz people who were in the meeting, makes me think this is a possibility. Hayward might have agreed, "If you trade for Player X, I'll sign."

Personally, I don't think Houston is as good as they were last year. Patrick Beverly and Lou Williams were good pieces for them. They already lacked depth, and they're even thinner now.

OKC might be better though.

Sure, but I think that's relative. Take the Rockets, for example: I don't like the pairing of Harden and Chris Paul. They both love having the ball in their hands and using possessions. Even if that means an assist, it doesn't mean the ball is moving and people are getting a real chance to get involved. I don't think they'll live up to the billing, but they are a lock to win 50.

Another year of Jokic/Harris/Murray development, add Paul Millsap, maybe add Hill, that team makes the playoffs.

The Blazers have the second-best guardline in the league and added a big, skilled brute that made a huge impact when he was healthy.

The Clippers are wasting their time and should've blown it up, but they'll still be good, a lock for at least .500.

The Warriors.

The Spurs.

The Cousins/Davis thing can only have improved.

The Grizzlies are always good. Might take a step back, but a lock for .500 or better.

The Timberwolves had a terrific offseason. Still need shooting, but they could take a leap this year.

The Thunder have the MVP and added Paul ****ing George as his running mate.

I like the Jazz's chances against any of them with Hayward (and hopefully a legit stretch/playmaking 4). But without... IDK, man.

1. There was no way Hayward was going to make his decision today. That would have made the whole trip look like a dog and pony show if he just signed with us once he got back. It's too disrespectful to all parties.

2. Of course he's torn. This is not a normal free agency. With Boston, it would be a storybook reunion with his coaching father figure, playing for one of the most storied franchises in the game, with much more likely trips to the Finals near term, and the type of national recognition he deserves that will be ladled out in TV exposure and annual All Star appearances. With Utah, he would be walking away from an organization that is walking the Spurs path, where he defines the culture of the franchise, with the best center in the game, lots of great young pieces, and of course guys he genuinely loves. No matter who he picks, he's hurting people he loves, not just simply choosing what's in his best interest. (I don't believe for a second he's thinking Miami, but that's a meeting you HAVE to take.)

My gut says Utah. I'm like 60/40. But I wouldn't be surprised if he does something unorthodox and signs a 2 year deal with a player option instead of the expected 3 and 1. It leaves money on the table if he gets hurt (and kind of messes with the 10 year), but it gives him flexibility if something catastrophic happens on the Jazz.

You are over thinking

Who could we possibly get from either of those teams that provides a level of compensation for losing Hayward?

Wow. First post on three years. I was actually wondering what happened with you s couple days ago.

Wishful thinking time: Hayward visited other teams to put pressure on Lindsey to make some ballsy win now moves.

Hayward was leaning towards Boston but listening to Lindsey's trade(s) that will happen when he signs made him strongly consider the Jazz again.
