A Big Move on the Horizon?

3-4 years ago when we were in the dark depths of our rebuild I think most would have said that becoming a treadmill team like the pups was not the goal. 3 years later we want to become what the pups were.

Super :/
The pups were making the playoffs?

Possibly but given the context of the thread and recent moves I think it's reasonable to assume the OP meant fairly soon (couple weeks at most).

As it was Windhorst's claim on a podcast a couple days ago that prompted this thread, it should be noted that his words were "Utah is primed to make a deal here RELATIVELY SOON."

I took it to mean something big. I don't consider the FA signings for backups to be a big thing that changes the makeup of the team.

I am leaning towards hoping to see something big, depending on who we lose.

We will need a Hoodsplosion to make the playoffs.
You said we want to become what the pups were. A team that misses the playoffs year after year after year. Who wants that? I know I don't.

You mentioned treadmill team in relation to the t-wolves. They weren't a treadmill team. They just always sucked.

No jazz fans are hoping to have season like the wolves have had for the last bunch of years.

I think the idea is that it would boost BK's win total and hurt the Celtics' pick.
Exactly what I meant.

As for the big move, I think it's dead right now. The new GM for NY has taken Melo off the market, wanting him to either stay or expand the list of trade options. Sounds like neither Houston nor Cleveland could come up with good packages. Other teams are getting wise; they're no longer willing to take huge salary dumps for minimal assets in return.

Most analyst think the Jazz are a playoff team and some think they win more games than last year.
I'm all-in. I think Utah DOES win more than last year. Probably won't happen in a stacked conference, though.

Outside of Phoenix and Dallas, it seems like every WC team has a plan and is moving in the right direction.

The conference is stacked and right now there are so many variables almost any prognostication is just pure guess-work. Several teams have new guys to integrate, there are rumors of more to come, maybe at the trade deadline, and the Jazz took at least a half-step backward, if not a full step, unless they can really integrate the new guys effectively and someone really steps up. There is also the injury bug to worry about. So many un-knowns. I would only be mildly surprised to see us win 50+, I also would not be surprised to see us win 30. Personally I think we will be chasing the 7th or 8th seed this year, maybe the 6th. But if we really get some guys to come back strong (like 4 of them) or start strong (the rookies, new players), we could be top 4 again.

What if the Stars align?

Who do they send in return? Does NY want their overpaid players?

Yeah, this looks like a salary dump for them rather than attempt to get better. If they can trade some of their crappy long term contracts for a crappy short term contract, that is a win for them, no matter how Melo plays. Of course I would rather the ball be taken out of Lillard's hands and given to Melo to shoot a midrange all day long.

Which is why I doubt Portland has a shot at getting Melo. NY probably stopped the Houston and Cleveland talks because they were dissatisfied with the prospects coming their way. Portland doesn't really have anything to offer them.

And Melo has to waive his no-trade clause.

Kuzma looks like the real deal. That proposal of mine of Favors and Diaw for Deng, Kuzma, Bryant, Randle and a future protected first looks better and better.

Deng would have taken the place of Jerekbo but oh well. Still happy with what we have.

Nah, still not a good deal. Deng's contract is just too bad to take on for the Jazz.

The Jazz have a realistic shot at Klay Thompson (and it seems like they are angling for that w/ the length of contracts they have been targeting). If they got Deng that would ruin it.
