Many who identify as conservative (or liberal for that matter) hold sexist and misogynist views. It’s been that way for centuries. That doesn’t make them alt-right. The alt-right movement sprang from white nationalism. It’s an attempt to update and mainstream a supremacist philosophy with a less toxic label.

White Nationalism is a huge part of the alt right, but I think has equally to do with misogyny. More than a few of the prominent alt-righters got their start with gamer-gate. I'll try to dig up a piece I read that ties it all together.

You're right. Alt-right types are not always white supremacists. All the ones I've seen are quite misogynistic. I'm a gamer, so I see alt-righters on nearly daily basis.

Peterson is your typical alt-right male, just disguised in a slightly more presentable package. He's more eloquent, but his points tend to be the same.

Got into some of his discussions about women’s history and I started to separate from him more. He down played the efforts of the women’s movements of the 20th century.

I keep intending to get back into No Man's Sky since the last big update. I'm on Ps4, do you know if the new Multiplayer is cross platform?

I don't think so. Sony doesn't allow cross platform. I love the new NMS update. It's a much better game.

Again, he's not your angry, loud, inarticulate guy posting on some incel sub-reddit. His basic arguments generally align with the alt-right, though.

Firstly, and most importantly, that there's a wide-ranging conspiracy to introduce Marxist ideas into (Western) society and scholarship and soften people on them, and then to convert the West into a brutal, Stalinist dystopia.

That feminism is part of this and generally a very bad thing which undermines pillars of our society and leads us(Westerners, of course) all to our doom.

That political correctness is a bad thing, but also specifically aimed not at making oppressed minorities feels safer in our society, but at the majority to take away their basic freedoms, like the freedom to hurl abuse and slurs at everyone and anyone.

The general idea that "our" society is under attack from without and undermined by traitors from within. Basically, white nationalism in slightly different terms.

Finally, the idea that racism or misogyny aren't nearly as big a problem(if they exist at all) as talking about them. The real problem is pointing out the existence of inequality, not the inequality itself.

Peterson is not alt-right.

He has 4 or 5 viewpoints out of literally hundreds (I've never seen a guy saturate the internet as quickly as he has) that align with alt-right viewpoints that the media has decided to harp on ad nauseum. And there are some other obvious mis-steps (enforced monogamy being one of them).

But when you look at his entire body of work, he says more than enough to be taken seriously and to distinguish himself from the run-of-the-mill conservative blow-hard.

There are many facets to every discussion, and I know there are a lot of things I don't know. I actually appreciate countervailing opinions more, as they require me to stress test my opinions. What I generally find is that the more I know about a subject, the less likely I am to dismiss someone else's opinion, especially on politically charged topics.

Sure. Everyone's got to have their line in the sand though. If a person is espousing white supremacy or **** like forced monogamy, I'm out.

As far as his non-political stuff goes, I don't much go for Jungian psychobabble. I truly don't get his appeal.
