Summer 2019 Roster Discussion

I mean if the backup plan is to take fliers on guys like Isaiah Thomas and Jabari Parker (I'm going to assume Hood isn't going to be a Jazzman again), then that's not the worst idea in the world.

Giving someone like Jabari Parker a 4 year deal is a bad idea though considering his injury history and him needing to play his way into shape every season.

Upside flyer guys are really 1-2 year deals... not the best use of cap space. Jabari can likely be had for mid level money unless he continues to play at his current level.

My thinking is if you miss on the primary targets get solid upgrade starter/rotation players that fit really well. Draft is where you get potential to have a big upside contributor imo.

Did you know that the lineup of DM, Ingles, Royce, Jae, Rudy is like plus 40 per 100 possessions... on played like 60 minutes but still. We could get a huge bump by playing better spacers and worrying a little less about positions. Put 2 spacers around Joe/DM/Rudy... preferably good switchy defensive players... and you are gold.

Outside of wanting Jrue (who I'd envision would be the 2 guard on the Jazz anyway), I've been fully on the "Let's upgrade the wing and forward spots" bandwagon and agree 100%. I'm alright with losing Rubio and just turning over the PG duties to Exum/Neto if it means getting some significant depth on the wings/forward spots like Bojan or a Danny Green or guys like that. Mayyyybe a nice backup PG option if you don't trust the Exum/Neto tandum health wise.

In my mind if you do that Exum basically becomes the Favors of the lineup next year where you start him and sub him early to play him a lot of minutes in non-Mitchell lineups since his dribble penetration opens up good looks for bench shooters, and in end of game scenarios he's the guy on the bench in place of another wing so Mitchell runs the point (which he does end of game anyway), unless he's balling out and deserves to be in the game.

We take a nuanced approach to the past, rationalizing why things didn’t/couldn’t happen, but always look to the future as if it’s a guarantee that there’s not some kind of nuance or complicating factors that could compromise what our hopes for the future are. So, we’ll get a handful of people here saying it’s irrational to think we won’t do something big in the summer, while some of us will point to some of the realistic challenges that may prevent that. But then when it comes and goes, they’ll point to the realistic challengers that they previously dismissed, and then point to some arbitrary, hypothetical future where things unfold spontaneously and without any snags.

And Rubio sucks.

We can't do anything going into the off-season until we ask 1 major question to both Favors and Rubio - would you be okay coming off the bench?

If either says no, then we let them go. If either says "whatever is best for the team" then we probably find a way to keep them. We could bring both Rubio and Favors back on team friendly deals and still have over $12 million to spend.

I wonder if Andy's thinking on this is colored by a belief that once we lock in on something, it's incredibly hard to fix our gaze elsewhere.

I don't think so. It's just that we face a severe lack of options in free agency or trade this summer if we're looking for that 3rd star type next to DM/Rudy. In free agency it looks like the only realistic options are Kemba or Brogdon/Rozier if the Jazz want to gamble a little. In trade it seems like the only options are Jrue (maaayyyybbbbeeee), re-visit Conley, possibly Love, or a miracle that some yet to be talked about star asks out of their current situation.

Hey nobody never paid nobody to "be in shape". They only got paid to score. That's it.

Kemba is such a long shot. We would have to renounce Rubio, Neto, Niang, Udoh, Thabo and decline on Favors to even get close to the max he would require. I think he stays or only leaves for NY.

As for trade, I agree that Jrue, Conley and Love as being the most logical targets. I wouldn't bother with Conley or Love, but I see us looking at them since we can't afford to pay them since so much of our core are under reasonable contracts.

I don't think Rubio will be back. He is not a long term fit with Donovan and I feel confident our FO is aware of this. The honeymoon "development" period is over and we need to do some serious team building.

I think Favors might be back, just not on the massive contract. Favors would be a great player to keep as Jazz lifer, in a steady bench roll. The questions are would he take a long term reduced salary deal without a starting spot? Maybe not. Either way its doubtful his option is picked up (pretty sure that doesn't prohibit us from resigning him to a different deal).

I made the thread about this, but think we should take a long look at D-Lo. Honestly, not opposed to Jabari in theory (as sometimes starter, sometimes bench, 20 minutes a game but not a key cog), but have a feeling those attitude issues are not going away anytime soon.

I need to start a "Countdown to Kevin Love" thread.

I love the idea of declining on Favors yet re-signing him on a long term deal making $10 or less per year. If he retired a Jazz player, that would be great. As long as he can accept a role off the bench and primarily as Gobert's backup, that would be fantastic.

If we renounced Rubio, Thabo and Udoh, kept Neto and re-sign Favors to $10, we would have around $20 million to use in free agency.

I don't know if 20 is enough. You'd have to fill your PG spot and you need a real solution at the 4.

My solution to the PG problem is trading TB and Exum for Patty Mills. FO would never do it but whatevs.

I'm hoping that we are okay at PG with Exum, Mitchell, Neto and Grayson. Maybe towards the end of free agency we use an exception to add somebody like Beverley, Lin, etc.

Of course the idea on extending Favors at $10ish comes after we miss out on max free agent targets like Tobias. With $20 million, we can still get a good player or two.

You broke up with Niko? :D
No. We’re not going to pursue Niko. I mean, our name will be floated, and we’ll be “aggressive,” but he’ll ultimately sign somewhere for a lot less than Love. Don’t mistake me saying we’re landing Love with me wanting to land Love. I put the acquisition of Love as the highest probable guy to come on board.

That contract though...

I too would take a long look at D-lo.
He went off again last night. 36 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds. Played 43 minutes.

Young with potential. Can shoot and pass.
