Everyone now sold on Russell? Most poopoo'd the idea just a month ago.
I get what you say, but context matters too. It wasn't so simple. At the time we were bellow .500 and out of the playoffs. And it seems we liked that draft. So trading away a 1st was pretty risky (sure, you can add protection but then would Chicago have interest?). No one expected the run we had last year and ending up with a mediocre pick.
Also, it's important to note that we were one of the few teams interested in Niko and had advanced negotiations. And no one was offering a 1st for him at that point, UNTIL Boogie blew his Achilles, thus the Pels got desperate for a big. And you must remember that the deal almost didn't get through because they wanted him as an expiring.
In hindsight (a blessing right?), I agree we should have traded for him. But we didn't have the information we have now. And I believe we must put things into context rather than over-simplify them to prove a point.
But both of those points aren’t a hindsight argument for me. I repeated ad nauseam that we weren’t as bad as our record and that we’d take off when Gobert got back, but people were too caught up in living on highs and lows. The second is that I said you need to take what you can get when you can get it because the landscape changes fast. And then we saw that when Boogie went down. We keep pacifying ourselves by overestimating the availabilities of talent just over the horizon.
I don't think Jazz management were caught up. It was a rational decision at the time: we could have gotten Mirotic without giving up a 1st. No one was offering it until Boogie's injury. And perhaps the Jazz weren't that high on him to give away a 1st in the late teens anyway (and judging by the trade deadline thats still the case, with Conley and Porter higher on their list). Tony Jones confirmed at the time we were not giving a 1st in that trade.
And I don't think Utah acts with the mojo "you take what you can get". They are very methodical, sometimes, to ad nauseam I concur.
Not sold. Intrigued. I feel the jazz should take a long look at him but it sounds like they popular opinion is that the nets would give him the max so it would be a waste of time for the jazz

Intrigued as well. Not sure I'd want to pay him the max anyway.
Nope. I don’t want him.
Yes, I don’t think they valued him that high. Hell, I don’t think they really value him that much at all. Sure, the perceived going rate was not giving up a first rounder. But it’s a question on how much you want to gamble. The gamble they took was the risk of NBA landscape changing. The only thing required for landscape to change drastically is one injury, one trade, or one unexpected free agent signing. A similar thing is the whole Conley debacle. Now, I don’t necessarily believe that Conley is the answer, but with the fact that they wanted him enough to really hold the whole team in limbo for a week. If they valued him that much, why was the sticking point Dante Exum? We try to haggle a little more out of a deal and let it not get done because of something meaningless to the deal. Again, I get that you don’t want to overpay to get someone like Conley... but they were prepared to do it, so they obviously feel stronger about it than we do, which makes it odd that Exum is the deal breaker. It’s like buying a car from the dealership, a car you really want and a deal you really want to close on, but you walk out because you want the gift certificate for 5 nights at the movies.
I want teh mud flaps!
For realz. Should have gotten that 2018 first round pick’s MFing *** on the first plane to Chicago. And if we thought Conley was a big difference maker, should have put Exum in bubble wrap, stamped it “HANDLE WITH CARE” and shipped his *** to Memphis.
For reals doe... Grayson and Dante better end up being good... the opportunity cost given up to get/keep them was significant.
Julius Randle is a beast. 11-21 for 31 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists against OKC.

There is a scenario where we have Niko and cap space... AB could have been in the deal to Chicago... would have had to waive Exum caphold and let him go too... but last years free agent money may have gone farther.
Just wait until news breaks that we almost traded a first and Favors for Tobias Harris but balked when West asked for Bradley.
“You can’t have the g league poor mans lemarcus Aldridge (you have to squint a little)as a thrown in... I don’t care that they made a logo out of you... you should see the balance beam print out on teh guy”
-DL to West...probably
I like him.
Holiday is pure class... we need to somehow Jedi mind trick them into sending him our way.
If we could add Jrue and Randle, we could be talking title.

Agree with most of this. DL tend to be very conservative and perhaps risk-adverse. I understand his reasons but sometimes I wish he had pulled the trigger on some of this moves. I hope he prove us wrong this summer.
He should spend more time listening to me. I’m like a poor man’s Jerry West. Or at least a rich man’s PGAB. And I hear he’s pretty rich himself.
Or maybe hire Lopo as his assistant GM. We would have at least 7 all stars. Trade machine all day baby
