What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Tony Jones did a Q and A today on The Athletic website. Someone asked what an ideal offseason would look like for the Jazz, this was his response: "For the Jazz (taking my version of ideal out of it), it would be to land Walker. Failing that, landing Harris, spending the veterans exception on Dedmon from Atlanta, and finding a shooter with the 4.7 million room exception and finding a rotation level player in the draft would be a pretty good summer. Also, Grayson Allen's summer is big as well. There's a chance he could develop into a rotation piece. The Jazz need that to happen."

He also said the Jazz have no interest in Jabari and he doesn't think they have any interest in Jeremy Lamb. He said if the Jazz happened to sign Tobias they would likely move Donovan to point guard and Royce to starting shooting guard. He said a trade for Conley is unlikely because they don't have the contracts to trade that they did at the deadline. Said Bogdanovic might be an under the radar guy to keep and eye on.
Interesting. So Walker or Tobias or Bojan. That's not optimistic at all...

Reading the tea leaves...

If we don't get Kemba it sounds like DM will be our de facto pg (Joe Ingles can quarterback, so I think he'd operate more as the pg). I like this as I think we can get better defensively on the perimeter with more size.

I doubt we make a trade during the draft... so it sounds like we are making this pick... in general you don't use a pick and then trade it a couple weeks later. I think I like this... there are quite a few guys I like around our range.

If we can land Tobias it is a giant step forward. I think we could move Jae for other needs and have Royce/Niang fill in some of the stretch 4 minutes. If Tobias is in then Korver is out... so Allen better be ready for some minutes. There are a few guys that we can find for the room exception that could help. Vet min could go to Dedmon (ideally but he may get more), Koufos, there are likely some other competent names.

Bojan is good too and I'd like us with DM, Ingles, Bojan, Jae/Royce, Rudy...

Beyond that it gets a little bleak as far as guys we can get with good current and future value, but you'd still be able to execute a Conley deal with part of the space and maybe make one solid signing.

Overall I like the idea that if we don't get an elite pg we are better playing DM at pg and adding a wing/playmaking 4... just will need those additions to be able to make some plays if we go that route.

I really really hope that we have some back channel knowledge of Tobias' interest and it is just that him and DM had a good chat after a game before leaving the court. I hope DL is utilizing all his Woj equity on getting the dirty on what the "sauces" are saying.

All U Muppets don't understand basketball. In the NBA today U need athleticism to win.
You also need skill. We've had plenty of athletes (Ronnie Brewer, Jeremy Evans, etc.)

Do U see him play before he got injured..... He was fantastic. I'm talking about speed. Ronnie brewer and Jeremy couldn't move like Dante. His size and speed are exceptional.

He's the only player that knows how to keep the bigs involved. Lets be honest in the Houston series the jazz got smashed cause donovan tried to do to much without involving others. Dante keeps players involved that's what U need to win

The biggest thing you need to win is guys that are actually available to play. Athleticism, speed, length, etc. do you no good whatsoever if the player that processes these attributes is constantly injured.

Good post. I agree with most. I'm fine with DM at PG if Joe is also there. Exum runs 2nd unit.

The way I see it, we...

- draft BPA
- push hard for Kemba
- miss there, push hard for Tobias
- miss there, pick up Favors option
- push for Bojan

- miss there, trade cap space for a draft pick. Take MKG to get Charlotte's 2020 1st rounder. Something like that.

It's a lateral move if we only get a draft pick, but we would have powerful expirings and picks for a deadline move should it present itself.

Thanks infection, framer, Thee jazz fan. I just couldn't remember Kanter's trade and was with limited net access these past days.

One thing I forgot to mention, Tony said the Jazz may look hard at Dragic if he opts out of his contract.

That's why its a dumb saying. Then they should call it something else... because a race is an even or competition. I think it comes from the tortoise and the hare... the moral of that story should be "if you are really fast and in a race then don't stop and take a nap dummy."

In life obviously sticking to something and working hard and smart has big payoffs.

You don't sprint the entire time in a marathon. You'd burn out within a few minutes.

Slow and steady! Precise and consistent in other words.

Building a championship team was a marathon in the 90s. It’s now a 50 yard dash. I’m all about patience, but the structure of the CBA now totally changes this calculus.

That's nicer than saying, "He's a guy with negative trade value."

This is probably true. I do wonder though if Memphis might still be interested in Exum as part of a package for Conley.
