What's new

2020 Presidential election

I eagerly await the day when the "social programs we don't like are socialism" chickens come home to roost. The rise of Bernie Sanders and the so called squad could mean its already begun.

Exactly.

I'm guessing Nebraska in one of the nation's leaders in farm socialism. Of course, farmers make up most of his state so those handouts are called subsidies and clearly isn't a form of socialism... /s

Again, this is why the GOP needs to be crushed. After so much hand wringing, Sasse has fallen right in line with the rest of the Borg in worshipping Trump.

A poll of likely voters in the New Hampshire primary, released today, shows Biden (21%), followed by Sanders (17%), Warren (14%), Harris (8%) and Buttigieg (6%). Tulsi Gabbard took 3% in the poll. If she keeps that up, she'll qualify for the next round of debates in Sept.

Sen. Booker came in at just 1%, and Beto O'Rourke got brick (0%). New Hampshire doesn't appear to be Cory Booker's cup of tea.

Sanders, in particular, is gaining ground on Biden in New Hampshire after last week's debates.

Huntsman resigned as Trumps ambassador to Russia. Looking at a run for Utah Governor.

I wish he would challenge the incumbent president instead. I know both parties have unwritten rules about challenging the incumbent, but maybe they shouldn't. And even if Trump wins the GOP nomination and Hunstman is a flop I think the discussions and debates would be important.

I don't know how Huntsman managed to stay in that position as long as he did. Dangerous job, especially with a president he doesn't totally support.

I'd rather he ran for President than Governor as well. I like him and think he would be a good president, but I really love Spencer Cox for Governor.

I still don't think Sanders or Warren would beat Trump in a general election. Biden, even though he's shaky and unoriginal, is probably the Dems' most electable candidate.

Keep an eye on the Senator from Minnesota though. She might be the party's sleeper cell.

It's an important job. I think he really took it out of being public service minded.

When Huntsman was governor before, he governed as a very conservative governor with some disastrous effects:
  • Signed into law public vouchers which would have funneled millions of public dollars to charters and private (religious) schools. This has been done in other states, like Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Louisiana, with disastrous effects. This law was overturned by a citizens referendum... In the aftermath, the legislature raised the requirements, thus making it more difficult for citizens to do this.

Voucher proponent Patrick Byrne, the CEO of Overstock.com who poured millions of his personal fortune into the campaign, told news reporters Tuesday night that he felt the referendum was a "statewide IQ test" and that Utah voters had failed.
  • Reformed the income tax in Utah, with again, disastrous results. It created essentially a flat tax. Which the state has had to make up for with increases in sales and property taxes nearly every year. It has significantly hurt education funding in the state. So when people bitch about their taxes going up everywhere, be sure to thank John for giving the super rich a tax cut while raising your taxes.
https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-...ntsman-says-he-enacted-flat-tax-utah-governo/

This created a much flatter tax, stripping away most of the deductions and credits. Utah taxpayers still adjust their income in ways such as counting interest earned on bond income or deducting from income the withdrawals they make from medical savings accounts.

http://www.utahfoundation.org/reports/getting-less-two-decades-k-12-education-revenue-spending/

Over the past twenty years, Utah’s K-12 education funding effort – or the amount spent per $1,000 personal income – has decreased from 7th highest in the nation to 37th.

It is also notable that shortly after Huntsman left office the legislature pass pension reform which has led to historic shortages in both education and law enforcement.

Sure yeah, I guess he helped cut regulations in Utah's (still) draconian alcohol policy. But his main achievements are still taking a toll on middle-class taxpayers and public employees.

I'd give Cox a try as we've already seen what Huntsman will do. I think he'll put up more resistance to the far right in Utah and won't just act as a rubber stamp for the radicals in the legislature.

I think Warren or Sanders could as well. Biden polls a bit better head to head VS Trump than either of them, but they still come out on top of him. Hillary lost by the narrowest of margins and was a historically unpopular candidate with far more baggage than either Warren or Sanders. Sanders in particular would not face similar issues in the Midwest as Hillary did.

No evidence of a Marianne Williamson surge, thank God.

Happy to see a few of my preferred candidates improving their standing as well.

It’s pretty funny to read conservatives make predictions about the 2020 election as if this is 1984’s or 1972’s presidential election or FDR’s second re-election.

The democrats have a number of candidates who could win. Trump isn’t popular guys. If he wins, he most likely will have barely won the EC and lost the popular vote by millions. And if the stock market continues to tank... or if democrats receive election meddling help from China, we might be looking at a blowout the other way.

In fact, I see any of the top 5 candidates beating trump. Having said that, I think there’s a clear 1-3: Biden, Warren, and Harris.

Trump sucks. Literally, only the dumbest and poorest demographic likes him.

This is pretty hilarious. And to see the righties get all
Upset over this and cry about it is priceless. Why shouldn’t we know about this public information?

Call those ****ers out!

The funny thing is, Trumpers whining about this week to be admitting that there’s reason to be ashamed. Which is an interesting way of reacting to this. The public with knowledge of these donors could reward or punish these businesses depending on what the free market decides is best with the public information they’ve seen from Castro’s tweet. It’s interesting that Trumpers already assume that this is going to be bad for these businesses, almost as if they know that they should be ashamed for supporting trump.

Private citizens who wish their names to be off any tweets should probably think twice before making political donations. Political “Free speech” is also a matter of public record. Citizens deserve to know who fellow citizens are donating politically to.

Lastly, it’s hilarious to watch Maggie Haberman try and spin this. She helped The NY Times write a huge report on who donated to the Clinton Foundation. Apparently trump supporters believe that their donors are entitled to remain in the shadows, unlike the Democrats.

You know what should be off limits? A presidential candidate releasing a senator’s cellphone number. Now that’s inappropriate. But I don’t recall any Trumpers running to Lindsay Graham’s defense, do you?

Really solid post. I was unaware of this quote. That’s an awesome find. Did you see it on twitter somewhere or what? That’s awesome.
Yeah I did actually lol. It's from his opinion on an 8-1 Supreme Court ruling against opponents of gay marriage who wished to keep their donations secret.
