Following Potential 2020 draftees

I didn't think he would either but the report says high 2nd round pick. His worst year of college his freshman year he still averaged over 9 points per game.
You think he's a better prospect than Nathan Knight?... c'mon man, there's no way...

Yoeli Childs looks nothing short of ridiculous shooting FT's... Where'd he learn that form???

There was supposed to be some big whole re-worked shot form this year too, right? and he shot 50% from the FT line?... That report is bogus as it gets, whoever wrote that is clueless or full of **** and knows it.

Wheres the report? link it. I'd bet its from some local ***-kisser who sounds completely out of touch.

KSL and the Deseret News carried it.

Chris Smith is a guy who keeps moving up my board the more that I watch. He's a big wing who has shown improvement every year at UCLA. He still needs some development time to his all around game but the scoring potential is nice. He dropped 30 on Colorado and was defended by Tyler Bey most of the game.

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about the draft and have hardly looked at this year's players at all. But ...

Chris Smith looks more interesting than the buzz he's been getting (seems to be on few people's radar). Long, skilled wings don't grow on trees. Actually I'm kind of torn:
  • This video is full of floaters and otherwise low-percentage shots without a lot of open-floor highlights and makes me think of Kyle Anderson a little. Yet he's clearly more athletic than (and maybe nearly as long as) Slo-mo.
  • His raw numbers don't look that great, but his numbers per 100 possessions are actually pretty good across many categories (though there's no one clear category of strength).
  • He didn't do much as a freshman or sophomore (which I tend to believe is a little concerning), yet he's made clear, year-to-year progress and he's younger than most in his (junior) class -- in fact younger than some sophomores and freshmen in this draft such as Woodward, Dotson, S. Bey, Toppin, Stanley, Achiuwa
  • Looking at stats, it seems like one of his big weaknesses is 3 point shooting (compared to some of the other 3 & D wings), but his FT% looks good and he's definitely made improvement; not sure I love his shot form, but I don't think there are red flags with it either
  • Looking at game footage, it seems UCLA employed him a lot as a go-to isolation scorer and he may have that advantage (creating own shot) over many of the other wings in the class; hard to know exactly how much of an advantage this is with so little spacing available in the college game
  • His assists/turnovers are a weakness, yet I saw some potential in the tape; UCLA also usually had him inbounding the ball in half-court sets which probably means there's some vision there.
  • He's long, with a decent body and athleticism, but I don't see a lot of toughness/high-level aggressiveness in his game; I think he projects pretty much solely as a 3, though I think he can survive in a 1-4 switching defensive scheme.
  • It looks like he has the potential to at least be adequate on defense; though I wouldn't call that a strength of his now.
  • He needs to become more efficient offensively and a quicker decision-maker within the scheme of the offense.
  • I guess, like so many others, you can see him as an NBA player if his 3-pt shot translates. Maybe even starter potential if everything goes well (which you probably can't say for many who are projected in a similar area of the draft).

Where do you guys stand on Lamelo Ball?

I love the playmaking and vision. Very real possibility he's a double digit assist guy. His handle is good. He's a shifty athlete I have little doubt he can beat his man consistently when his man plays him close or is on his heels.

I don't buy the outside shot. I think that he needs to fix his lower body mechanics and develop something consistent. The upper body isn't great either. His upper body is a little better than what Lonzo started with but it still isn't great. That two hand push shot in front of his face is something I don't ever see having a ton of success. I think he could be a low 30's % shooter from 3 maybe. 33-34%. Don't really see much better than that. Of greater concern is the lack of finishing ability, lack of ability to draw fouls, and a midrange game.

I just don't know if he can score enough to be more than like a 3rd scoring option.

Defense is questionable too. The tools are there to be decent. Not sure he'll ever be above league average.

There's a solid chance imo that he's like a slightly better offensive and slightly worse defensive version of Ricky Rubio

I get the Jason Williams comps. I'm not sure how I feel about him. It's become less popular these days to put the ball in someone's hands who can't reliably score. Teams are going to go under on screens with him every time. They'll back off to guard his drives and passes and dare him to shoot. He needs to go to a team that can really space the floor for him to do his thing.

Now that said, you've got Luka Doncic throwing up ten 3s per game, with 32% efficiency, and people love him for it. So who knows...

Deni Avdija (I really like him) in Maccabi Tel Aviv's first official game after the 3 and a half month break.
23 points 7 rebounds 5 assists in 24 minutes
Not too bad...

I hope that LaMelo lands on the Timberwolves. With shooters like D'Lo and KAT it'd be a good show.

His shooting off the dribble is clean!! Decent PG prospect for sure. That being said, placing him anywhere other than the 50's of this draft is probably a big mistake.

Yeah he won't be crazy high on my board. I'm just digging deeper into some late second/udfa types. There's nothing else to do really because we have all this extra time before the draft and I've already done deep dives into the top names.

Madar kinda reminds me of Carlos Arroyo a little bit.

What are your guys thoughts on J'yoe Mama?

Idk how I feel. Shows pretty good feet to cut off any type of penetration. Body shape isn't very optimal. Gets hot from time to time especially in evening games. Kinda weird. Almost like Mama is cookin. Quite uncoachable once a month or so tho. Needs to work on that.

Here is who a Yahoo mock draft has the Jazz picking:
24. Utah Jazz
Vernon Carey, 6-10, Center, Duke

Even before the fallout between Jazz star Donovan Mitchell and center Rudy Gobert, Utah was going to head into this draft looking to add to a defense that took a step back overall this season.

The Jazz ranked 11th in the league in defensive rating prior to the season being suspended indefinitely. That would be their first time outside of the top 10 in that category since 2015 if they don’t move up during the season reboot next month.

Vernon Carey is a beast. He's over 260 lbs and plays like a slightly smaller version of Demarcus Cousins. The problem is that he lacks a bit of length that would make him ideal to play at the 5, and he's a bit big and slow to guard on the perimeter. This might limit him to being a backup 5. I don't think the Jazz would draft Carey, and there's just about no way the Jazz would pass on Patrick Williams, Aleksej Pokusevski and Kira Lewis to draft him.

If the Jazz are looking to add defense then Carey is not the answer. The person who wrote this article isn't the most knowledgeable around.

The positives Carey brings are size, ability to score around the rim, rebounding, age. Not defense. He's not a good defender at all.

He's also a 5 only on both ends of the floor. Pretty much the last thing that the Jazz will consider drafting with Rudy and Tony on the roster.

So someone that I know out of a mutual love for basketball has connections inside college basketball and he passed some info on to me regarding some off court stuff on Paul Reed, Reggie Perry and Jaden McDaniels. Let's just say it's not so great. I think I might move Reed down my board. I trust the source. You can take this FWIW and choose to believe or not.

If you watch some of those players, especially mcdaniels and reed im quite sure whatever your referencing does manifest itself in a negative way on-court too.. things like that usually do... Reed and McDaniels both get easily frustrated on the court, and start trying to make greedy plays and it compounds the issue..

I'd say reggie perry's on court issues are kinda more in the realm of being an airhead, Perry obviously has the 'tools' of a 1st rd pick...

why is someone like Paul Reed so skinny at 21 years old? does it not speak to a lack of discipline? I think it does...

That supporting cast Paul Reed had at DePaul, is probably way better than casual fans realize too... so that sorta "i'm gonna carry us to victory, even if were better off playing team ball" mindset was probably a bit toxic.. sometimes i'd be watching them (depaul was very entertaining, was saying it all season) and paul reed would just be in 'showcase mode', which im sure most all the players are in, but it shouldnt be so obvious...

Staying at home in Washington was a TERRIBLE idea for Jaden McDaniels. He needed to go somewhere like Kentucky and let Coach Cal pick him apart. Instead he stayed home and got coddled, and his stock tanked in the process.

Y'all might recall people had Jalen McDaniels projected as a 1st rd pick the last 2 drafts at some point, and he ends up barely getting drafted --- there was some issue with a girl on camera...

No one in this draft displays worse body language than Jaden McDaniels, thats no secret..... Utah will never draft that kid, unless their looking for a benchwarmer who's got a scowl on his face.
