Down On the Farm

I wish Quin would see it this way. He never will. I am at a loss how Butler can even earn any more minutes when he is buried behind the end of bench guys and will be lucky to get 2 minutes at the tail end of a blow out.

I don’t mind if we’re sitting him for the veteran players. This season and team isn’t about developing Jared Butler. We’re trying to win a championship.

People got mad at Quin for playing him 2-3 minutes at a time, but for me I saw that as a bonus and was happy to get anything at all.

What I can’t agree with is prioritizing Forrest over Butler. Forrest isn’t really helping us now and I can’t see him helping us much more in the future. His offensive game is just too bad to be a real rotation player.

Butler’s biggest shortcoming right now is not knowing how to play Jazz/NBA basketball with NBA players. Playing him in the G-League doesn’t help with that.

This issue might be what pushes me from a lukewarm Snyder fan to an outright dissenter. We have serious need to rest ballhandlers and we’re filling those minutes with a low-upside kid who gets less and less useful the more he plays (as he gets more and more scouted/game planned and has no counters).

It cannot be yelled enough that Quin gives JC the craziest amount of leeway vs performance I have ever seen but Butler is totally dog-housed because he hasn’t figured it out in a couple of months with hardly a chance to develop in real minutes.

Quin is not going to change. He has his rotation and if you aren't in it, you sit.

He literally made the change to play Forrest instead…and this spot in the rotation was already a deviation from the norm.

Butler was garbage. It’s understandable if he was benched…but not for Forrest. I have no problem with Butler earning his minutes but Forrest hasn’t done anything to earn them either.

I get the feeling Quin sets his rotation during the off-season when he is planning for the new personnel changes, and then he just rigidly adheres to that rotation unless something drastically changes. Having a kid with upside who could be something special isn't enough for him to change his Holy Rotation unless that kid goes off for 30 in 8 minutes or something stupid wild like that. Quin just won't change.

As far as Forest earning minutes, it appears for Quinn the important thing is not making glaring mistakes. He isn't watching for flashes of greatness in anyone, he's watching for little mistakes. Forest is really limited offensively, but he generally doesn't make many mistakes. There is something to be said for that, but very few championships have been won on the back of playing it safe. This is a case where sufficient might just be the enemy of great.

Do we still have Jarron’s bird rights?

When I saw Locke’s tweet, I immediately thought of you and almost tagged you in it.

I think we’re missing an opportunity of seeing him as a spot up shooter.

Its really just some Quin and Jazz org boot licking. Our job is to win a title... not develop JB, but giving JB some run to develop helps us in a number of ways to accomplish the first goal. Quin is a checkers player sometimes.

I just love the contradictory thoughts of "send JB to the G League" and "JB needs to learn how to play with talented players and play off ball". So he is supposed to go down there and defer to players who are way less talented than he is... and worlds less talented than his Varsity teammates???? Or will it just reinforce the habit of playing with the ball in his hands. BTW I don't think that is necessarily an issue... I think he develops into the type of player you want to handle the ball a lot.

It is such a small investment to give Butler the 10-15 minutes that Forrest gets when Mike is out... instead of investing in a mildly interesting tech stock with a small amount of funds, Quin is putting that investment into a low interest CD.

I wasn't mad he was only getting 2-3 minutes at a time... something is better than nothing... I was mad he was judged based on an impossible window of opportunity. Play DM in 2-3 minute stints and he will look rough at times.

Forrest comes in and does nothing... and is rewarded for doing nothing. JB made mistakes... if you want him to do the Trent Forrest I am sure he can.

It must have been a tough hit for Butler to go from summer darling to yesterdays news within a few very short opportunities. The 9-minute game where he got yanked for Forrest was a brutal way to treat a guy who could be so important to us. He put up good numbers in his only other decent opportunity, the 14 minute game.
