Predict the Rudy Gobert trade

I think him being waived is a given. What if the front office goes totally skinflint and lets Juancho, Paschal, Hassan, House and Forrest walk and replaces them with the lowest salary rooks and keeps the roster to the minimum? Would that get the Jazz below the tax?
No.

No, if we did all that even without signing any minimums we’re at 148.2M with only 10 players. The luxury tax is 149M and we’d still need to fill out the roster with minimums.

This can't be true. But yeah, the part about the hard capping is a thing I thought might be an issue. Arent there ways around that though? Like doing the trade after each team has made their off-season moves?
It does if they are Base Year compensation…. I think if they are getting like more than a 50% raise or something they are byc and Ayton qualifies.

A few contracts ago, sign-and-trade players were excluded from following BYC rules; BYC rules only applied if you sign them and later traded them.

I think that is what is happening here. The sign-and-trade in #92 is the OTHER team doing a sign and trade. The team subject to BYC here first signed a guy for $10M, and then later tried to trade them. That's when BYC happens.
Late to the party but yes… this is the issue with Ayton… the hard cap is the other issue. Unless we move JC or Bogey into a trade exception or cap space the hard cap would be pretty tricky for us.

Exactly. This isn’t an issue for all sign and trade player, only ones that are due big raises compared to their previous contract. Because Ayton is coming off his rookie contract and is set to make significantly more in his next contact the Base Year Compensation applies.

It's pretty unprecedented for guys eligible for the super max at this point in their career to get traded, right?

No, not if the incumbent team doesn't want to pay the supermax. See Demarcus Cousins with the Kings and Chris Paul with the Clippers.
I meant to say coming off of their rookie deal but we have seen it a couple times. It's strange to me how quick the Suns cooled off of Ayton.

Has Ayton signed a contract yet? If he has not, BYC rules don't apply, as I understand them. They only apply if you sign and then trade as separate transactions.

I just checked the FAQ, and in #93 it says the old BYC rules no longer apply. Changes, changes, changes.

I’ve heard credible cap podcast nba nerds say BYC applies if signed and traded (Duncan Pelton types… but can’t remember who when or where… am I turning into @Thee Idiotic Minivan K). I’m just going to take their word for it here. I’m sure it could get done somehow… I’m just not all that interested. When Ayton started his career he said thing like his goal was to get to his second nba contract. One of the unique things about Rudy is he is so motivated… as a big it is a little rare. Many of those guys like basketball… but they don’t love it or aren’t consumed by it… motivation imo is one of the big reasons Phoenix is worried about paying him.

Apparently the rules changed in 2011. I'm getting too old to keep up.
I do tax work so the somewhat loathe this type of research… you really have to look at several sections of the nba “code” then look at which ones apply… yada yada… so I just prefer taking it from guys who do it for a living and are trustworthy for some things. Sometimes you don’t have a choice though. I know I’ve heard that in a sign and trade he’d be BYC player so take that for what it’s worth here.

The only two players for a Rudy Gobert trade seem to MIN and CHI. TOR has been mentioned as well, but I just don't believe it. We know the deal would be Trent Jr + OG or something along those lines.

Comparing MIN and CHI, I think MIN could actually put together a better package. Pat Williams is the only premium asset either team could acquire, but how does McDaniels compare to Pat? The gap isn't as wide as you'd think. MIN also has a bunch of different youngish players. Reid, Nowell, Vanderbilt, and they just drafted Kessler and Moore. They have all their picks. I'd keep an eye on them.

Imagine if we would've drafted McDaniels instead of Udoka.
