2023 NBA Draft Megathread

Doesn’t show any advanced ball handling skills. I hope he skyrockets up the draft board to push someone else down to us. I do think he is a very gifted shooter and has great off ball movement, but I have concerns about his size as well and effectiveness in 2 spot in nba. I could envision role playing minutes off bench with length career doing short minute stints. To me seems like a Reggie Miller or rip Hamilton type of player with his movement and shot seeking….but those players were both >6’7” I believe
The thing is he has good defensive potential. He plays a role on UConn. It will be interesting to see if he can do more on ball out of the context of UConn.

The only thing we know for certain is that the draft boards are going to look a hell of a lot different in a few months from now. I could definitely see Hawkins being a riser due to his tournament.

I think Malik Beasley is a fair, modest comparison from him. But what’s different is his movement shooting. When he moves around it buys so much constant pressure on the def new. I think he can be like Redick/Buddy in this way. No hate to the Dick lovers but Hawkins is my pick for the best shooter in the draft. His jumper is just filthy.
Hawkins could be a plus defender unlike Beasley or at least not a negative.

Potentially. I have Dick rated higher as an overall player because I expect Hawkins to be a negative defender. He’s very athletic but a little too skinny. But he’s competitive enough that he can be average.

I like that he has a decent amount of blocks for a guard. It shows good athleticism and some degree of defensive anticipation.

I like Dick better as well. I like Dick’s size.

Dick has the size, he's got the stroke, he's going to be able to put it in the hole and shoot from distance. The question is how much volume. Did not see enough volume at Kansas.

The thing that gives me hope with GG is that he cried when they lost in the sec tournament. He must really care because I think most players would be checked out emotionally by then. So I have some hope for his development. I just don't think he is a top 10 talent though, but still potentially a good player.

If my team kept getting blown out in the first half of games week after week, with no hope of improvement, I'd probably pout and throw a fit too.

He was the main reason they couldn't improve...

No, they had one guy on that team that qualifies as a point guard, and that's Wright who came off their bench. They had one or two guys other than GG who are even worth guarding on the perimeter--Meechie Johnson and Chico Carter. Otherwise, defenders were sagging off the other two guys and clogging the paint. GG had nowhere to drive, had no one to give him the ball with an advantage, and couldn't get space on the perimeter unless he pulled from 23+ feet. That's why over 60% of his offense was unassisted. If GG didn't score close to 20 points, SC didn't have enough offense to even stay close to most of the teams in the SEC. So GG forced a lot and didn't even look for his teammates.

SC had about 8 - 10 games this year that were over for all intents and purposes after the first 8 minutes of game time. The team just wasn't competitive.

You have to look back at what GG did with Team USA to see what he looks like with real teammates.

Hawkins’ shot has poor arc and I’m not sure what else he does on the court. Fine height but overall seems small.

I just don’t personally see much of an NBA player. If that shot translates then he will find a way for sure.
You haven’t watched him defend then. He is a Dawg on the perimeter.

Son I watched a lot of their games. IF GG played as a team player they would have been much better. His teammates regularly outperformed him on both ends with little to no help from him.

This is Team USA tape from last summer. GG played a lot of minutes in this game against Ecuador, who was a zero opponent, but you can start to see what GG looks like when he's integrated into a talented group. He makes a few nice passes for assists and a couple passes back out to the perimeter.

Sir, you are not pointing to a game that was decided by over 80 points to scout from are you?
