2023 Trade Rumors and Gossip Involving the Jazz

I'm really curious about Murray. I went back and looked at his numbers and I'm curious about his other-worldly rebounding numbers his last two years in San Antonio. I know those weren't good teams, but still. I don't know a lot about the personality stuff or chemistry issue, as that always seems to be the underlying implication, but he may be the perfect buy low guy. There can't be a consensus on who a "buy low" guy is because it's an oxymoron but he may be the guy right under our noses.

Same.

The way he played early this last season, facilitating and moving the ball and taking better shots, would be the version needed, moving forward, but the way he regressed later to the black hole isnt what the new version of this team needs.
Regardless, he’s 30+. Just not on the timeline IMO. Jazz should be trying to win games now but they should also be patient and diligent in not rushing the job.

Second option and this is what I think happens… he opts in with the understanding we have agreed to move him somewhere he wants to be. We take back an expiring or bad salary and get something for our trouble. He extends with his new team who is not hard capped. Everyone wins.
I thought the reason he didn’t sign an extension mid-season was because he was worth more on the market than what he could be extended for - I doubt he cooperates with this scenario

If we were to concretely talk about the drawbacks to Murray, what are they? I know one is his efficiency. Some don't think his three point percentage is high enough. It does look like, though, probably the biggest thing hurting his efficiency is that he doesn't get to the line.

We probably didn't pony up the full amount we could and he wanted to see what the market would be. Once he sees the teams with cap space are like Houston, Orlando, San Antonio, Utah... and that he can't get to his preferred destinations without our cooperation. Now that he could be a FA which team is going above MLE for him? Full MLE is like 4/52M... he could opt in and extend and get like 3/48M... or do a full sign and trade... but the team acquiring him would then have all sorts of cap restrictions that come with accepting a player in a sign and trade.

If I was placing odds...

- JC opt in and trade at 40%
- JC sign and trade 15%
- JC take MLE from someone 15%
- JC sticks around on a somewhat team friendly deal 30%

Now you guys have me imagining that that it is possible to have starting Lineup like Dejounte Murray, Sexton, one of the Thompson Twins, Lauri, and Kessler. Pair that with a bench with Ochai, THT, Gay, Dunn, Damian Jones, and our 28 pick (maybe GG, Sasser, Podz or Maxwell Lewis). Its possible we might still have either KO or Clarkston too. That is a nice jumpstart to the rebuild.

He might be a world class *******... that's some of the concern I know some have voiced. Yes the game is a little midrange heavy. He might be slightly overrated as he put up numbers on a ****** SA team. I just think he's a good mix of multiple things we need and we can do a renegotiate and extend deal with our cap space and avoid the FA that Atlanta is fearful of. They risk losing him for nothing in 12 months.

With Murray you'd want to preserve enough cap space to make sure you could renegotiate and extend him. So he makes $18M you can actually go up to like $40m this year and then have the following year decline by up to 40% then build off that number.

So say you went $40M this year, then like 32M, 30M, 28M its a 3/112M extension and he doesn't have to risk injury... plus gets 22M this year as an added bonus. Would help us make the cap work too.

His eyes may be bigger than that and this will likely be his biggest payday. You figure he's made like 52M over his career... this offer may be in the ballpark and would lock in enormous wealth for him.

If I’m being honest, I’d probably keep THT and let JC walk. I’m happy to facilitate a trade for him (if necessary) but only if it ends up being a plus trade for the Jazz. Don’t overlook the possibility of trading JC to the Hawks. I think there’s going to be some real interest there.

Hawks are going to dump salary. Full stop... whether its Collins, Murray, Capela... they won't be acquiring anyone outside of minimum dudes until they figure out the salary stuff. Not sure if there is a JC for JC swap in their future... but I don't think that's the destination.

My guess is Dallas, either LA team, Phoenix, maybe Toronto... its hard to see great fits for Clarkson... which is why he maybe wasn't moved and why his market may not be as high as some think.

It's not so much a timeline thing. I think he is fine for the timeline, but he's just not a "playoff player" with his defense and we have Sexton.

My thing with Murray is he really that guy? Is he someone we want to max? Because if you want to keep him in Utah you are absolutely going to have to pay him a boatload of money.

I get there is a danger of pussyfooting around a bit too much waiting on the perfect player, but I think better choices will come around in the next 2-3 years than Murray.

Murray would be a nice piece and he has a great history with Hardy. That said, he isn't "that dude". It's a good point about tying up that much dough in him because he would require a max I think, assuming production is decent.

You may not have to max him. I think you could do the renegotiate and extend deal I outlined. Paying him 30ish a year for a few years versus 45M is a pretty big deal. He's then an asset if he isn't the guy... but he at least helps up be better in the short/medium term while our draftees and Walker/Ochai develop.

I just think beggers can't be choosers... and there is enough there to bite IF....IF the acquisition price isn't too steep and you have indication that an extension can happen.

It's Utah. You would have to max him

Are we wanting to wait 2-3 years hoping a better option comes available?
