Clarkson Opts In

But I guess it’s a better use of the term than when someone suggests a team signs someone else’s free agent in a S&T.

Progress…
It does amaze me the terminology and the cap knowledge some people that cover the league lack. Its also possible she is describing the transaction in a way most fans would understand.

I have thought for months that Smith wants JC here very badly because of the image he wants to give off about his team. It could go another way but I think this means JC is sticking around and will get a nice raise.
I think the fact that an extension is not being reported means it is very much in the air. The fact Tony and now Sarah mentioned it. I think its close to 50/50 but this provides more options for him to get paid and be in a good situation. Either way its a win for us.

Almost exactly 1 year after blowing up their roster and shipping off their 2 franchise cornerstones, the Utah Jazz are already dangerously close to fielding a 50 win team and still have a **** ton of future assets.

I was adamantly against the Danny Ainge hiring and I have no choice but to admit that I was completely and utterly wrong on all levels. The dude is currently running a master class on the rest of the NBA and we get to sit back and reap all of the benefits.

It’s kinda nice…

I hate to be nitpicky and technical but that’s not a sign-and-trade. Perhaps because these have happened so infrequently over the last decade people don’t know what they are.
If he signs an extension and is traded, that's a sign and trade, no? Or if it's a restructure/extend to a trade?

From Hollinger... basically the renegotiate deal...

One thing to watch with Utah's Jordan Clarkson is whether his "opt in" turns into a "renegotiate and extend." Utah could potentially top up his $14.2 million contract with the Jazz's expected $11.2 million in remaining cap space. That would put Clarkson on the books this year for $25.6 million in 2023-24. By doing so, Utah could then decline his deal by as much as 40 percent in 2024-25 to $15.5 million, and by 8 percent a year later in 2025-26 to $14.2 million. The total package would as if he he'd opted out and re-signed in Utah for three years, $55 million – except that this scenario manages the cap much more favorably for the Jazz by pushing a bigger chunk of his money into the 2023-24 season's leftover cap room.
I love this.

Its an opt in and trade... or just a straight trade with intension to extend... they could also do an opt-in, extend, and trade... its a mouthful so go with sign and trade is fine.

Its actually much more beneficial to the acquirer to do it this way though because they are not hard capped when doing this.

If that were the case, it’s easier to say, “he could still be traded.”

The term S&T has always referred to free agency. Extend-and-trade has also been used, though that’s not really an official name.

Sorry didn’t see this posted already.

IF JC is traded... IF it happens... not predicting it for sure happens... here are my guesses:

- Clips for Norm Powell basically straight up saves LA a bunch of money and gives them a bench vet replacement for a guy that may not be happy (there has been enough noise on Norm that I believe he is out there)
- LA exercises Beasley's option then makes the trade... we get draft stuff for our trouble.
- Bucks one is trickier... wonder if Allen plus a signed and traded Ingles could get us to the right salary... needs some draft comp in there.

I suppose Boston with Brogdon could happen as well but yeah I want a pick in that one. I think the clips Brogdon deal fell apart because they couldn't get a physical in time and had concerns.

Plus infinity picks and lots of salary maneuverability.

IF Jordan Clarkson gets traded, I think there’s a decent chance it’ll come from a team that isn’t on anybody’s radar at the moment.

One thing to watch on the Lakers... Beasley's option date is today. If they decline or extend it then it will be a bit telling. Sounds like they are operating over the cap as they already basically announced they are getting Bruce Brown for the MLE.
