No BYU-Utah Rivalry Football Games in 2014 or 2015

Utah-BYU series over

Well, for 2014 and 2015 anyway. It also sounds like when it returns, it won't be on a yearly basis. Utah plays Michigan in 14 and 15, so I think Im fine with the rivalry taking a couple years off here and there as long as Utah is filling the void with big time opponents. As for BYU, I'm sure they won't have a problem scheduling Idaho St twice a year. Rise and shout baby!

Why would Utah want to play BYU?

The problem is BYU isn't Notre Dame (nor will they ever be) and they don't play a demanding enough schedule...So, basically, all Utah would be doing by playing them would be giving BYU a chance to upset the Utes and gain more national cred. If Utah beats BYU, it's expected and it would be of little to no benefit for them.

I see why the U did it, is all I'm saying—but with that said, I'll miss the BYU / Utah rivalry games, those were always fun to go to and fun to watch.

If Utah has sold out to the point they are "too good" for BYU that is sad. Sucks for both BYU & Utah fans.

I get that vibe from some, but not even a majority of Utah fans. But, I definitely get that vibe from Chris Hill. Every time I hear him talk about football he sounds more and more like a total elitist.

A definite lose/lose for college football fans in Utah.

Not so sure about that. Can you imagine the venon and rhetoric thats going to build up during the 2 off years? If anything, I think it might take things up a notch. 2016 is going to be downright anarchy, especially if both schools are successful during their time apart.

I think BYU and Utah fans over estimate their own importance. While it might be a big game within the state, it doesn't resonate anywhere else. Hell, Michigan and Notre Dame are taking 2 years off in the near future, yet for some reason Ute and Cougar fans think they should be exempt from scheduling issues that go along with becoming bigger programs.

Thats not what it comes down to. Hill and the majority of the other PAC 12 AD's would like to see the 9 game conference schedule dropped down to 8. It would allow much more schedule flexibility and under that scenario you would see Utah play BYU every year. Right now, Hill is just being matter of fact and not sugar coating anything.

Utah has definitely become elitist. Refuses to go anywhere in basketball, either. I guess the 20 point drubbing at the DEC sealed that.

Sad. It's been a great rivalry.

One odd thing about this, though, is that many Utah fans are saying they don't need to play BYU because (in effect) Utah is now so much better than the Y. However, the reason Chris Hill gave for not playing BYU is because he didn't want to schedule too many "really, really difficult games" in one season.

Sure, a few Ute fans are going to imply that Utah now has bigger fish to fry. That's just the rivalry talking. Why pass on the chance to take a jab at your rival?

Truth of the matter is, if Utah is stuck playing a 9 game PAC 12 schedule and a Big 10 team on top of that, Utah needs to worry about Utah in regards to scheduling balance. With Utah having an unbalanced home/away schedule in the PAC every other year, it makes it even harder for them to commit to a long term home and home with BYU. It's easy for BYU and their fans to sit back and be critical of Utah for dictating this change. BYU has nothing but scheduling freedom, almost to a fault (nobody to play in November). Once Utah made the jump to the PAC and BYU went independent, the trajectory of these programs were set in radically different directions. It's time for fans from both teams to pull up their big boy pants and deal with the ramifications of growth.

There's rumors that the PAC 12 wants to move towards 8 conference games per year. I really hope that happens and if/when it does, it opens the door for Utah and BYU to resume playing every year. However, until that happens Ute fans shouldn't sit around wringing their hands worrying about the rivalry with BYU. If Utah can bump BYU every couple of years in favor of the Michigans of the world, it's a good thing.

BYU on the other hand, can turn their rivalry focus to Boise State. If BYU fans dislike Utah fans now, I can't wait for them to get a load of Boise fans once they're playing them every year.

BYU has only themselves to blame.

They need to wake up and get into a bigtime conference. Teams are flooding the big conferences and locking up their entire schedules to big conference games. Had BYU joined the Big 12, the rivalry game would still be in place (and an extremely lucrative game because of the colliding Big 12 and Pac 12 Conferences). The attention, money, and intensity would be insane.

As it stands now, it's the Big Conference Utah Utes vs some Independent School that thinks it's Notre Dame or something.

I don't blame Chris Hill for looking out for his team. By missing out on BYU they can either plan a game with another big conference school (lke Michigan) and make a ton of money or play a cupcake to prepare them for conference play.

BYU needs to join a conference or basically concede that athletics aren't important anymore and begin the dismantling process of their football program. Turn it into BYU I with Intramurals. In a way, this has already started. BYU hasn't send anyone to the NFL in quite some time. They're only digging their grave deeper by preferring to stay Independent and playing no one after their 4th week and forcing their basketball program into high school gyms.

I don't disagree with you whole post, just that first sentence. A big part of the issue is that the Pac-12 wants teams to have a 9-game conference schedule. That could change, but who knows? The other issue is that Utah is exactly like all the other schools where football has become all about the money, tradition and rivalries be damned. BYU obviously likes getting money too since they have a deal with ESPN, but they're not in it for the money as much as everyone else. If that were the case, they'd probably be in the Big 12 already.

BULL ****. If BYU was all about the rivalry, and not money, they would agree to play 2 for 1 with Utah. THEN Utah wouldn't have to make up lost revenue, would have an additional home game when they have 5 PAC road games, etc, etc, etc. But, BYU would never agree to that (in part, because Utah is their biggest game of the year, which was evidenced by the fact that the Utah game was the most expensive ticket, by a long shot last year).

Last year, Utah bought out Iowa State and Boise St to play BYU and gave up home games. What did BYU do???? Whine like little bitches. It is the new reality. Keep pouting with your ball and whining how everyone is afraid to play you.

Right, Utah is so great that it is such a huge sacrifice to play lowly BYU every year.

EDIT: Also, did I say BYU wasn't about the money at all? Also, is it even a "rivalry" if one side is making outlandish demands?
