What's new

Game Of Thrones

Red viper vs mountain that rides should be awesome.

Is strong belwas on the show? iirc he is not. A shame

Yeah, kinda disappointing, but I guess they can't have everyone. Looks like they gave his major scenes to other characters.

I read that they decided to cut the character from the series. Which makes me wonder...

Who do they have that will eat the locusts?

because it is OVERRATED!

Nope. It's UNDERscripted as a matter of fact. It could be hell of a lot better than what kind of greatness it possesses up to this point. And even if they don't push it further more with the awesome scenario builders in their hands, it still is probably one of the greatest TV shows ever produced if not the best.

Not giving away any book spoilers.

This could easily be one of, if not the best season of television in history, I mean it. After this season I expect a drop off in quality for at least two seasons, simply because of the source material. Not saying it won't be great, but when we look back I think we'll say "The show hit its peak in seasons three and four." Or course we have two new books still to come, so maybe the final couple seasons will go out with a bang.

I think they're doing book 4 and 5 in one season. If that's the case, there's enough good material in those two books to make a good ten episodes out of. It's after next season, when they pass Martin, that one wonders what will happen.

See, I like the show, but when people say stuff like this I think that maybe DJ has a point. Great show? Yeah. Up there with the best ever? Eh, not really. Not for me, anyway. Obviously there's room for debate here.

I don't think they're doing those books in one season, probably just following all the characters at the same time rather than splitting them up like books 4 and 5 do. Or maybe you just know more of the gossip than I do.

the best i could name 25 better shows who stood the test of time.
dont know how many books there are and how many season there will be but 5-10 years after its final season it will be forgotten.

also for it to be considered best shows.
it can be done 2 reasons quality.
or groundbreaking.

quality, i see no difference in quality then other good quality shows.

also it has done nothing groundbreaking.
series like oz. which paved the way for nudity and violence to be acceptable (game of thrones nudity and violence is possible thanks to oz.)
it just seems like game of thrones nudity is there jsut for "shock" value. in oz earlier seasons(before season 4, i think). the nudity and violence had a point. it added to the prison realism.
the nudity in game of thrones has no point whatsoever other then attract the i wanna see boobies crowd. this show could easily be done without the sex and nudity.
the violence however do ads something to the plot. its a bit over the top at times. but we can let that pass.

so for me oz quality might not hold up(before HD) but it set a standard. it made sopranos and wire possible, which one upped what oz did.
now game of thrones violence/nudity. seems to be there just to one up shows that have gone before.

i watch it for dragons and zombies. but seriously a chick can only let you wait so long before you say **** it and go get the satisfaciton somewhere else right.

i just dont see anything(other maybe than its popularity) that makes this one of the best shows ever. but hey popularity is all that counts these days eg the transformers franchise.

so please enlighten me what makes this the best/one of the best/a top five/ or a top 10 show. then i can name 20-50 other shows that are better because of quality or because of groundbreaking impact they had

See, I like the show, but when people say stuff like this I think that maybe DJ has a point. Great show? Yeah. Up there with the best ever? Eh, not really. Not for me, anyway. Obviously there's room for debate here.

I had not meant to generalize my thoughts about it to put it to the top of the all time list of course, but I would love a debate here. Maybe it helps me understand why I like it so much.

GoT to me is a show that has a unique atmosphere which is more effective than its other good sides to me. You know I'm really into S&S stuff, we've talked about it before if you recall. I like Conan, Kull, Silmarillion, Skyrim, Gothic (PC game) types of medieval stuff. You see, there is this fairy tale feeling when you read or watch a Tolkien tale. And I'm perfectly fine with it. It has its own value. GoT has more of a realistic type of atmosphere and mood compared to the other medieval stories, at least in my humble comparison of past which I assure you is nothing like a know-it-all fan of fantasy, really limited knowledge, yet I think efficient enough to recognize a good work when I see one. Game of Thrones has amazing musical background, storyline, acting, character tree and development that makes you put it in a different position from other medieval productions. The 1st season really got me in it. Ned Stark was the perfect model of the Northern Barbaric Noble King. I just cannot even imagine a better piece of acting for that role. I always pick or develop those kinds of characters in RPGs. It kinda is my obsession. And the show gives you this feeling that there is supernatural existence, but it is so long forgotten and about to come, that the entire political frame of the show's world has got separated from it. The show also does not set a readied Good vs Bad conceptual dualism to the viewer, and detail the characters depths to you and leave it to you to pick a side or just stay neutral to all, be an observer. It has the best dwarf character I've ever seen on any of the fantasy stories. Amazing actor, great voice, best fit for the job. There is a serious emphasis towards showing nudity and sex but I'm OK with it, although I do believe some might find it unnecessary. And the seasons are really short for that kind of a LOADED world full of stories. And there is an unnecessary gap between the two consecutive seasons that most probably affect many fans' attraction towards the show in a negative way. The contrast of the scenary is crazily dragging me into the atmosphere. That oldened, dusty, shadowy atmosphere is too accurate in order to make you feel like you're there, living the moment.

They killed my most favorite characters Ned and the Attila Han. But I'm still frantic about the show. Can't get enough of it.

The down parts I would say are the too cheesy character show-off of Daenerys Targaryen, her dragons -which should be a lot more effective and shown more than screaming and flopping wings. And the White Walkers look kinda dumb. They should look terrorizing, like a frozen version of a Diablo level when you face the Diablo himself. I think the producers have already started to eat from the stash instead of pushing the show forward and forward since the 2nd, but as I said, I love it generally.

Transformers? No, actually **** no! I am not and never have been a fan of anything just because it was popular. **** hell no! Even the sound of that is disgusting to my ears. I get that GoT has this image now that it's too popular and has got too cheesy advertising and behind the scenes stuff added to a serious amount of publicity of the artists and producers/directors, but that definitely is not the part that drags me in. I would be delighted if you would be so kind to read the post I wrote in reply to Atheist Preacher: https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?15533-Game-Of-Thrones&p=792184&viewfull=1#post792184

I tried to summarize why I like it so much. And a few down sides I always hated about it. I think both GoT and other productions I love all had the kind of atmosphere, the concept of a world that has been built in mind so greatly that it helps you escape the reality you're in for the moment. I was a big fan of Oz. It also is one of the greatest to me, especially with the tendon cutting scene (lol) alongside the Wire, Six Feet Under, first season of Dexter, there are of course more. Please feel free to write down your favorites that stood strong against time that consumes us all.

Good thoughts here. I particularly agree that GoT has a good mix of realism with high fantasy elements. Fantasy is often too "magicky." Martin found a nice balance -- especially in the early going -- of using magic/fantastical creatures very sparingly, to the effect that when these things did show up, they had way more effect than a show/book where characters are just slinging fireballs around at each other all the time. It helps with the suspension of disbelief.

But as much as I like the show, there are things that bother me about it, and also some missing intangibles that I'm not going to be able to adequately describe. Part of that is that I read the books long before the show came out. I suspect I would enjoy the show a lot more if I didn't know basically what was going to happen in every episode before it even airs. As a result, I'm particularly sensitive to places where the show deviates from the books, and I tend to either strongly like or dislike these deviations. For instance, I was extremely disappointed that the Hound's speech to Sansa was cut and given to Littlefinger (this was actually the scene that Rory McCann auditioned on; see below video). On the other hand, I loved the scene between Robert and Cersei toward the end of episode 5 of season 1, I love the scene with Littlefinger and the whores in episode 7 of season 1, and I love all the scenes between Arya and Tywin in season 2.

In any case, a major problem I have with the show -- the major problem, perhaps -- lies in the editing, i.e. how they piece together the story of all these disparate character groups. Martin was famously a screenwriter, and famously wrote these books in order to break free of the restrictions of television. Only now, lo and behold, it is a TV series. It's not so much that the showrunners are doing a bad job, but that the story is so wide-ranging that it was handicapped from the beginning on TV. If anything, that's an endorsement for what a good job they've done adapting it. But I frequently find -- particularly in the early and late episodes of a season -- that there is just too much intercutting between character groups. The showrunners feel we need to "catch up" or "check in" with everyone with some regularity, whereas in the books you'll typically spend a longer amount of time with one character before moving on to the next group.

I'm also slightly more critical of the acting than some others. Most surprising from your point of view may be that I don't think Dinklage particularly deserved his Emmy; he's fine (good rather than great), but it's such a good role that it would have been hard to screw up, and I can imagine it being played better (my image of him from the books may be biasing me too heavily here, but Dinklage has a fairly stiff style of delivery that rubs me the wrong way a bit). Meanwhile, Kit Harington as Jon Snow and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys are average at best, which is disappointing given what central characters they are. Some of the other actors are truly marvelous; to me the standout of the entire show is Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister. He absolutely embodies that role and pretty much steals every scene he's in. Also, much as many people dislike her character, I think it's hard to deny that ‎Michelle Fairley played Catelyn Stark about as well as could be done -- you need not like the character to admire the acting. I could mention others, of course.

DJ says he could name 20-50 better shows. The lower number, maybe, although I wouldn't go quite that far. But just off the top of my head, I'd take these shows over GoT: Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, The West Wing, Rome, Battlestar Galactica, Walking Dead. Going into "lighter" shows, I'd find it easier to live without GoT than Stark Trek: TNG, Star Trek: DS9, and Scrubs. And if we then include animated TV series, throw in Texhnolyze, Mushi-Shi, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell, Kino's Journey, and some others I mentioned in the "perfect movie" thread. I'd say GoT is in my top 20, maybe it might even squeeze into my top 10 for live-action. But for me it just isn't even really in the running for best ever, my prime criticism being that the story is simply too huge in scope for its own good as a TV show.

How the hell could I forget him! Sandor Clegane. You see, that's what happens when they cut you from the show for a year. I love that man. The actor, the character. That voice!

You probably have already noticed that I have not read them. And I too do believe that whether reading them or not extremely affects he pleasure taken from watching the show. I would never put a TV or movie adaptment over a good book I read. What you read clothes itself with the images that you create in your own perfectionalizing mind. And there is nothing like it.

dont mistake better. with ttaste.

for example i love the **** out of banshee.
but is it quality wise a better show than got?
HELL NO!

so how do we define best and better. quality-wise, actingwise or did it do something groundbreaking(like oz, or wire, breaking bad)
examples of groundbreaking: oz had nudity and violence, the wire had like no real main character but a city being the main charcter, and breaking bad turning good guy into villian(turning villian into goodguy has been done)

so if we go by taste
banshee imho in above GOT,
but if we go by quality GOt is lightyears ahead of banshee, same as with acting.

so when i say i can probably name 25 shows that are better i dont mean my personal taste. but i mean qualitywise/staying power.

everyone remembers star trek for some reason.
or twilight zone
or wire
or breaking bad(although bad example seeing as it is recent, but i bet it will be remembered)
or friends (note don't like friends, but should also list shows i dont like)
or sex and the city(also cant really watch it have seen a couple of episodes)
imho quality wise/acting wise/ doing something new those are better shows then GOT.

my point still stands GoT is overrated, due to popularity. if everyone loves show a for whatever reason it tends to become "The Best". The worl we live in is a popularity contest.

I think you should read it. I have read the first 2 books but I liked TV Series nonetheless(though it has been long since). I can't see why it wouldn't work vice versa.

My Favorite actors from the TV Series are Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister, Rory McCann as The Hound, Sean Bean as Ned Stark. There are also actors whom I think do a good job. Maisie William as Arya Stark, Aidan Gillen as Littlefinger, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Sibel Kekilli as a Shae and Hodor(of course).

Talking about other series my favorites are Spaced, Carnivale(though it has ended abruptly second season), Breaking Bad. Arrested Development and Black Books to some degree but I got to say True Detective is quickly becoming my favorite ever. Great characters, incredible acting to go alongside an interesting story.
