MAX Hall arrested for shoplifting, busted with cocaine

I'm having a hard time believing that the "we should have sympathy for drug addicts" noise coming from BYU fans applies to people that don't attend BYU. I'm having a hard time believing that y'all wouldn't be much more critical than Utes fans are being if the shoe was on the other foot.

Problem is that you lump way too many people into that group
The attitude I'm complaining about appears to me to be institutional. I have no problem believing that there are fans who are not okay with it, and it's even possible that those fans are in the majority, but I still see a tremendous amount of this behavior.

lol football players... even byu player uses cocaine.

I agree with the BYU fans on one thing (today at least, when it's their guy in trouble) we should have sympathy for people who are addicted to drugs and stop incarcerating them.

Depends on the fan.

I'm a byu fan and I would not be talking **** if it was a ute player.

When Wilson got busted for the drinking thing I didn't say a word and thought it was no big deal.

Part of the reason this is being talked about so much is because it's a byu player and that makes it a much bigger deal.

Hearing about this type of thing at other schools would be unspectacular and much more meh...... also, hall is particularly hated and that makes it even more fun for ute fans. (Rightly so)

If the same thing happened to Kyle van noy then ute fans would still make fun and talk ****, but a lot less.

Think he is saying that despite how different BYU tries to appear, the people who attend and run the school are just as prone to the pitfalls of life despite how perfect and holy they may try (or appear to try) to come off.

You guys have no clue what you're talking about. You do realize the CIA/FBI recruit Mormons(who happen to be BYU students/grads most of the time) disproportionately because they are not as susceptible to outside influences, right?

As for Max, hopefully a Chris Herren like reversal is coming. He has that same personality where if he could get clean and could be open with his story, he could be just as impactful especially since he already has a built in audience with Mormon youth groups and whatnot.

Link?

I have heard this before, never seen any verifiable proof of it.

You'd be the exception to the rule then. If it was Alex Smith getting pinched at a Best Buy for shop lifting and coke possession, the very same people who are tripping over themselves to preach mercy for Max Hall are the same people who would be KILLING Alex for his transgressions.

We can talk about how "different" BYU is, but at least in regards to current and former players, I don't see it. 2am fist fights with customers at Betos, Gas stealing scams, under age drinking, shoplifting in order to score more cash for coke. Hell, the recent rap sheet alone tells me that BYU should be considered a P5 program.

And for the record, had Max not professed hatred in his heart for the classless, lack of morals Ute fans, there wouldn't be nearly the uproar that there is right now. He's reaping what he has sewn. The real victims here are his wife and kids. Max wasn't some poor soul reaching out for help. If he gets help now, it won't be because he went looking for it, it will be because a judge demands it.

Have to kill you bro, and don't want that.

Mormon urban legends are so much fun to debunk, mainly because so many people latch onto them as reasons for their faith, or at least faith-building stories that are ultimately lies. I have heard people use obvious mormon urban legends in testimony meeting, and had a bishop once tell me one to show that the Lord works in mysterious ways.

Very wrong on the Alex Smith thing. I like Alex a lot and would not give him crap whether he reads it or not. I'm sure there would be some, but that's really a sign of how embarrassing our rivalry has become. For some fans it has turned into blind hate for all things (the other team) and goes both ways.

I do understand how Hall's hate comments have set the stage for this. That's how it goes, and I understand the rivalry as it is enough to know it's a softball and we can't expect opposing fans to not take a hard swing or two. For most I doubt it's the fans wishing bad things on Hall personally, it's just they love the idea because they want sooooo badly to have good trash talking material and lets face it, this is perfect.

I hope Hall can get his life in order and overcome whatever it is he's dealing with, and I would say the same about any Ute or former Ute player.

neato

As for me, I build my faith in other ways. True or not I don't really base anything on stuff like this, and have no axe to grind proving it true or false... but whatever it takes for you to get your kicks.

I disagree on the whole.

While I do think there are some who act this way, I in no way see it as pervasive.
I also think those who have problems with something like this are looking for it and tend to One Brow it and see it everywhere they look.

*shrug

BYU fans are correct. Enjoying this is as bad as enjoying addicted Utes hiring Brian Johnson as offensive coordinator.

I wonder is there are any studies or any data out there tracking crimes committed at universtities by college students.

If there is, then i wonder where byu ranks among all other schools in rapes, underage drinking, robberies, etc etc. I would think that they would be near the bottom of the list. I could be wrong though

I can honestly say that I probably would have been in this category several years ago. Now, having seen firsthand what drug addictions do to people, there's no way I wish that on ANYBODY. Not even Utes.
Yes, Max saying what he said has brought this to a higher level. I don't think there is anything wrong is pointing out and enjoying the irony in the fact that it's Max Hall wearing a BYU tshirt that got nailed with drugs. But to relish the fact and enjoy it as a BYU player and throw a party because of it is just wrong.
