Chad Ford: Exum > Burke right now; rookie player that's most positively surprising

One thing I noticed is that Exum has a hard time bringing the ball up the court against pressure. Calderon (who isn't known for his defense) kept him from starting the play until there were about 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

Look, whether Exum is starting or not, we aren't gonna be a good team. It makes a lot more sense to bring him along slowly against backups than to force him to play heavy minutes against very good players when he isn't ready. I don't get why some of you are so impatient, whether it's just that you're stupid or being incredibly reactionary, but it makes more sense to have Exum come off the bench for now.

Never mind.

I know it is only a small sample but it will be interesting to see how Exum goes on this 5 game roadtrip
At home he is hitting 52% FG - 50% 3PTS - 3.5 ASt and 0.75 TO
Away he is hitting 40% FG - 0% 3PTS - 1 AST - 1.5 TO
I had no idea. Something I will certainly be watching for now.

Dennis Schroders PER this year is a measley, 35.86...

averaging 1.8 steals in 12 minutes per game...

I wanted the Jazz to draft him for his defense and ability to move the ball up the court in hyperspeed.. look at these underhand scoopshot layups he's getting in halfcourt offense... dudes quick as **** with the ball.

Well, the away games were @Dallas and @LA Clippers.
Burke hasn't exactly been lighting it up on the road, either, although his assists have been surprisingly good. Should also be noted Trey has played 2x as many minutes on the road.

Burke 35% FG - 25% 3PTs - 5.5 AST - 4 TO's

We're kind of in a jam here. Burke has been awful but Exum is not ready to face starters and is use to playing with Rudy.

So what's the jam?

This team isn't making the playoffs. Trey knows what he's doing out there, he just isn't hitting shots. Keep bringing along Dante at a reasonable pace. He still has a lot of little things to work on.

The jam is that Trey Burke's trade value is plummeting and he hasnt even played 82 games yet... Sadly his value peaked the second the Jazz selected him, and its never recovered to that point since, kinda like buying a brand new car.

who wants a shooting PG that scores 1 point per field goal attempt.. some of yall dont want to trade him so this doesnt seem relevant, but its the truth.

Isaiah Cannan's shooting 47% from 3 this year on 4.3 attempts, he was a 2nd rounder, does anyone actually think Trey is a better shooter than him?? do you think Houston would gladly swap him for Trey??

We coulda bamboozled Detroit in the offseason for him, you could never tell me otherwise. Thats their prodigal son, they didnt care about his rookie stats, they were running Dumars out of town(deservingly so), but alot of the outrage was focused on passing on Trey in that draft.. (Meanwhile Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a baller)

Your really selling Exum short here.....I've watched all the games and Exum has been protecting the ball to the tune of only one turnover every 19 minutes AND it wasn't just limited to the 2nd units.
I haven't advocated starting Exum over Burke ,I like Exum playing with Gobert and Hood ....BUT it's hard not to ignore that Trey Burke's troubles are just a carryover from the same problems Burke had last year.
Exum's play warrants the minutes earned ...not some perceived notion of bringing him along slowly when he's playing better than most here thought possible.
If Burke picks up his play and starts playing good ,maybe Exum watches ......but if Burke keeps struggling ,what is Exum learning sitting and watching that

I took it easy on Trey last year, cuz he was a rookie, and because i made my stance pretty clear on what i thought of his skillset / athleticism / shot selection and defense before he was ever on the Jazz, in the 2013 Draftee''s thread.

For those who dont remember, I made a big stink about Trey... I never bought that he was a Lottery Grade player, at any point in time. I felt it was rather obvious he was being overrated due to awards and having the limelight (a la JJ Reddick/Adam Morrison).

Posters wanted to compare him to the other draftable PG's that year, but i was asking the question - how does he stack up against the PG's already in the league? I thought the answer was not very well, his ceiling looked LOW to me.

I said he was fringe-lottery talent and graded him an 89/100, didn't think he had all-star potential. I hope he proves me wrong, and does great, seriously, I just wouldnt bet on it.
