What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

It doesn’t matter what the conversion is. It’s the same thing, whether per minute, per 24, per 36, or per 1k. They’re just multipliers.

It's just funny how people use a "per 36" for a guy like Niang and uneducated posters can be like "man, Niang could average 28 points per game if we played him more".

Only an idiot. They’re easy to ignore.

Something people don't seem to realize is that by losing Favors we actually lose 2 rotational players, not 1. We lose a solid PF and an amazing center. He plays 2 distinct roles for this team and we will have to replace his minutes for both roles.

All 26 minutes. Favors puts up good numbers as our backup center, but its also against other teams benches more times than not.

I like Portis, but anything more than $12 million has me saying no thanks.

Kinda the range I think that gets it done. Wonder if Wiz want to do a sign and trade. Would give them a trade exception... better than nothing. Would hard cap us at the Apron but we won't even get close to the apron.

I'd still prefer Niko... Bobby is fun though.

At some point, you should like your team because it’s something other than a logo or your hometown team. Joe is absolutely critical both to how well this team plays and it’s culture.

Kind of interesting coming from someone whose posting history is a broken record of saying how badly the Jazz need to get rid of Favors (and Exum). I know you don't agree that Favors is important to the team's success, but it seems to me that saying that Ingles is completely vital to Jazz success and culture while Favors is a hindrance is going way overboard in making this a open-and-shut case.

Offer $10M and let them fight over it.

I see what you did there... I think we know who'd win.

I think $11-12M a year is high enough over the MLE that FA in the Niko Portis tier should take it. At 10M its almost exactly MLE money and opens up the number of suitors to teams without space. 16-17M for either seems like way too much.

If we signed Portis to $12 million or less on a 4 year deal, it could end up being one of the best deals in the NBA. The kid is only 23. He's a lifetime 36% 3point shooter. He rebounds, plays hard. Hits his free throws. And he hasn't even played with a decent PG yet.

4 years $48 million sounds about right for Portis. Start it at $10 Million and escalate it so we can sign someone else as well

I'm kind of with Handlogten's Heros at this point regarding Mirotic. He might be undervalued at this point. I don't think his defense is really worse than Harris's. The need for Harris's playmaking is somewhat obviated by the presence of Conley.

But I'm still not moving on from Favors just to get Mirotic. Favors may also be helped greatly by Conley's presence. If you could get Mirotic and a very good backup center, I'd think about it. If you could get Mirotic, a decent backup C/PF with some defensive chops (say Vonleh), and a shooter (Ellington, Bullock) with Favors's money, I'd take a very long look. But I think we're likely $10M short for that.

I don't want to replace Favors with some poor defenders (Portis, J. Green) who seem like they can shoot (I think Mirotic is likely to be a better defender than them). If you're getting them, it better be because you have some really good defense coming back as well or you're just keeping Favors (though it sounds like the money will not add up).

So I'm entirely happy with going into the season with Favors and seeing how things turn out. Free agency will be interesting, but there's a good chance that we can't find anything that will make it worth moving on from him.
