I agree with you.

The way I see it, we need an upgrade at one of the following spots (# is priority):

PG (#1) - I think Favors and Crowder are fine PF options if PG was upgraded. Ideally, I think upgrade Rubio while keeping Exum and his defense. If Mitchell ever figured out how to be a great PG, we would want/need an Exum type.

PF (#2) - If we got a scoring PF (Tobias type), Rubio would be fine and our SF/PF/C depth would be so strong with Crowder and Favors coming off the bench (should we still have them post trade/acquisition).

SF (#3)- If we got some scoring SF (Middleton type), I think Ingles could play some minutes as a small PF and some pressure would be taken off Rubio

We need one of these things to happen to be a contender.
 
Favors is at 30.8% from 3 this year on one attempt per game. Hoping he can get that to 32-33% by the end of the year. And next year, up the attempts to 1.5-2.0 per game and the % to about 35%.

Cause next season’s the year for our run. I’ve said it for six months now. We’re winning the title in 2020.
 
I do like the idea of Mitchell becoming a point guard, Exum backing him up, and trading for it signing a solid shooting guard.

I'm also still hoping Exum can get a consistent 3 point shot and then he can handle starting at pg or playing off guard.

I think that trading Rubio and Thabo for Hardaway Jr. might be a brilliant move. NY could move Rubio to a 3rd team and go full on tank. Hardaway is a great scorer. If he has a bad day, we have the depth in Korver, Exum and eventually Grayson.

I don't put a ton of stock in PER. I mean, this year Neto has the third best PER on our team, but do we actually believe he's been our third best player? Do we want him playing more minutes? The answer to both of those questions is obviously no. I also don't really care if Exum and Sefelosha were top 5 in PER last year, they clearly weren't 2 of our 5 best or most important players. I think PER is an overrated stat.

Part of that could well be the fit under the current system. I suspect part of that is Favors starting the game against the opposition's best unit, and then Crowder comes in to face off against the bench unit. So for about half/third of their time, Rubio-Mitchell-Ingles-Crowder-Gobert faces bench unites, while Rubio-Mitchell-Ingles-Favors-Gobert faces starters.

Also, part of my thought process is that an NBA coach needs to adjust the system to match the players, and I think Snyder could be doing more of that as well. However, maybe he is doing that, and I'm just too ignorant to see it.

Very good post and great point about going against the bench vs starters. I didn't think about that
