2024-25 Trade Rumors Thread

There's so many good players on tanking teams. Looking at teams like BKN and POR.....they definitely want to tank but they have like 3-5 decent vets in their way. It's going to be hard to find destinations for all of them.
And the top teams that would be buyers are kinda tapped out on assets a bit. The ones that have stuff its like their last shot at adding someone.

They wanted to keep some vets around, that much is clear. Sexton works hard and is liked by his teammates, so maybe they felt like he was a better option to keep than those mentioned? Or maybe they didnt get serious offers?

Playing him in a key role with high volumes and bright green light only makes sense if you:
A) Want to develop him into such role or
B) Want to trade him and maximize his value
If we give him all the leeway and make him a centerpiece he may produce big numbers and become the famous "good player on a bad team".

Also my theory isnt that they dont like Sexton. It is that they do, but not at 30M+ or whatever the limit may be.

I say give him the opportunity to prove himself to be more or trade him. You aren't forced to give him a bad contract if it turns out he's a good stats, bad team guy. Maybe they do value him as a 6th man on an appropriate contract, I just don't think we need that guy right now. Like I said earlier, if that's all you think he is then he fits in the buckets of all the vets we got rid of in the past two seasons. Benching him and nuking his value in the hopes of resigning him to less two years from now just isn't great asset management. Sexton is unrestricted. Doing damage to a player's career in hopes of signing him for less isn't a realistic strategy imo. The path we're on is a direct route to Sexton walking in two years and the only thing we got for it was missing lotto balls.

Before the season, I thought of Sexton in the same boat as Kessler. He's a positive player that will hurt the tank, but he has the potential to be more and thus it is worth giving him a shot. They had the potential to improve their value and/or become a big piece in the long term future. Did I truly believe either would get there? Probably not, but I could see how someone might think so and it was worth it to give them that chance. With the way they're treating him, I now see Sexton more like John Collins. He can only be a good backup, and we simply don't need good backups at this stage. If we could get value for Collins, we'd take it in a heartbeat. If we get value for Sexton, I think we should also take it. Good vets that help you win belong on good teams, not on tanking teams. You can always sign another Patty Mills for veteran presence.

As far as actual Sexton trade destinations, I like CHO and DET the best because it would potentially knock out a tank competitor. Two birds with one stone. LAL, MIL, and NYK are all teams who have had rumored interest in the past IIRC. Sexton is a Clutch client. Other teams that might make sense if you squint: ORL, ATL, NOP, LAC, SAS

An example CHO trade:

Micic+Martin+MIA 27 (protected 1-14 in 27 and unprotected in 28) for Sexton

This is the exact pick that CHO got for Rozier.

Playing two tiny guards isn't ideal and he's the only other guard we have that you can trust to be the primary ball handler with the second unit

I'd imagine that we'll see countless lineups this season just to see if we can find a trade to get rid of them

And all these players basically have the same warts. If you were to tell me what's wrong with them as players, you'd say the same thing. They're all ballhogs, chuckers, can't play defense, etc. Fair criticisms of Sexton, but also fair criticisms of the other options. Truthfully, the only thing that I can come up with that separates Sexton from Key/Clarkson is that he's actually efficient.

If the Jazz really don't believe in him, just move on. Current situation benefits no one.
I would add that Sexton differentiates himself in a positive way by being a dog. He doesn’t have the body or other natural talent for defense, but no one can say he’s not committed to being the best version of himself he can be. I’d keep Sexton out of all of them at this point, but yeah, if the Jazz feel the opposite then they should cash out sooner than later.
