121 million people self reported driving drunk last year. I would not call that an extremely low number of the drivers. Which I believe is about half of the drivers on the road. Obviously those people are not driving drunk every time they drive.

But wrecks increase greatly at night as do the number of drivers who are intoxicated. Those numbers correlate but not a cause for increased wrecks at night. Maybe a factor but wrecks would still be up at night if no one drank.

Best to have a passenger call dispatch if possible. I've done that on crazy drivers and pulled over when the cops nabbed them and gave a statement.

I normally just sit on a bean bag and listen to Bjork, the Dirty Three, Pink Floyd, Spiritualized, the Flaming Lips and other bands cut from the same cloth. If you've got a fire to sit by and a woman to curl up with, even better. I also find getting 20 or 30 friends together, dressing as clowns and going on a pub crawl is also highly recommended. Do that every year.

The handful of times I've been behind the wheel and shouldn't have been, that filthy drug and its fangs have had something to do with it. The Horror!!!!

I don't really have time to continue this discussion too thoroughly, but I believe the 121 million stat is 121 million EPISODES of drunk driving, not 121 million PEOPLE. If those that ever drove drunk during the year did so 20 times each (a number I just made up), then we're only talking about 6 million people. Still a lot of people but nowhere near half of the drivers on the road.

I almost want a graduated scale for the fines but that's a very hard thing to do.

Quick story:

I recently went on a short trip with a friend who owns the same breathalyzer that UHP uses (his mother works for the Sheriff's dept. so confirmed). We got lit up the night before leaving but fell asleep at a reasonable time, something like 10:30-11 p.m. We left the hotel just after 11:00 a.m. the next day and drove for about an hour and a half before pulling over for a hangover beer. 13.5 hours later. I decided to test the breathalyzer just to be on the safe side and blew .16, which means I was probably in the .22 range when I left, or about 3x the legal limit. We had to sit on the side of the road for about two hours at that point.

Now, I was driving just fine with no worries at .22, which is probably 5-6 beers for me. I can handle that and drive just fine. But, if my wife were to drink 3 beers and drive? Forget it. I'll bet someone like [MENTION=14]colton[/MENTION] drinking 6 beers in, say, an hour would be fall over drunk.

But .05 is total ******** even if they have some stats to back it up.

Yes, that's a good point. If we use stats the same way cell phone use is a much bigger problem in the USA than drinking and driving. I firmly believe most evidence backs up that cell phone use is just as dangerous or more dangerous than drunk driving.

Even if cell phone use/speeding/drowsy driving and so forth is less dangerous it's still selfishly endangering other people and should equally make you a bad person (logically) as a habitual drunk driver. Although most people's morals are illogical and arbitrary. We just like to judge people to make ourselves look better.

Why do laws not equally punish cell phone users like they do drinkers?

Why do people pretend like someone who drinks and drives is a bad person but they are okay for speeding and using their cell phone?

I do volunteer DUI testing with various Utah police and highway patrol groups. I am always an example of someone who can drink way over the limit and be fine and my wife is usually am example of someone who can be way under the limit and should not be driving.

The .05 law is a joke. It isn't going to do any positive and is just a way to further hassle drinkers in Utah. Why not go after bigger problems first? Why not take away every drivers license that is texting for 1 year and make them get special very expensive insurance for years after? That would do more good than this law for safety.

I do wish they could do a scale of offenses as well. I just don't drive if I have had more than a beer anyways so this doesn't effect me personally, just the principal of it.

You could make a fortune during music festival season. We normally strap a couple of catheter bags full of vodka or gin to our legs and walk the booze in that way for your non BYO shows.

There is no way drinking 5 beers makes you blow a .22
