Derrick Favors was the best defender in the league last season...

I think any all encompassing defensive statistic that puts Favors/Mitchell Robinson/Jones Jr/Nurkic/Kleber as a top 5 list is a flawed statistic.

It doesn't claim to be all-encompassing, just looking at another aspect of defense (getting your opponent to miss his shot). Some might even say it's important.

That's literally the purpose of playing defense though lol, followed by if they're going to make a shot lets make sure it's not a high value shot (e.g. long 2s).

More traditional metrics factor in things like steal, rebounds, blocks, deflections. They are all part of defense.
 
Nope: you hadn't qualified it that way in the original statement.

It's true that Favors wasn't the best PF match for Gobert. (In fact, he was the worst, though the Jazz still had a solid +/- with him and Gobert together.)
