The only difference in his game this year is he’s more efficient. He’s down in almost every other category besides FG%, 3PT%, and PPG.

He’s only 26 so it isn’t a huge surprise that he is better efficiency wise the older he gets.

Also, the question is if he needed a change of scenery to achieve that efficiency.

I think the last two years had bogged down the Don/Rudy relationship and brought negativity to the whole locker room.

I was a fan of Quin Snyder, but looking at the success of all of our traded players elsewhere. . . coaching and managing the locker room has to be considered one of the main reasons the Jazz fell short in the playoffs.

Something was broken in Utah and it’s clear that everyone is thriving now that the divorce(s) are finalized.

Donovan continues to have by far the best season of his career. He's averaging 30/5/4 and shooting 50%, 43% from 3 and 89% from the free throw line.

There is another difference. He is an mvp candidate.
The stats you mentioned that are worse this year are a tiny bit worse. The stats that are better are a huge increase and all career highs.

Mitchell seems to be in a very good situation with the team and players around him. I'm guessing he's even happy he's not in NY right now. It's a pretty inspiring story for what many considered an undersized player who wasn't highly regarded in college to be doing what he's doing. It's just too bad he didn't want to do it here. That said, I think much of what has been mentioned above is the reason. I'd have really liked to see how Hardy would have affected his attitude but I'm also extremely happy we received Lauri in the trade.

I would wait untill the end of season with analysing Donovan's numbers and making conclusions. He had those months when he looked like a mvp candidate here too.

Id say just about as legit as he had here at this point of the season. In fact, last year Dec 24th he was ranked 8th by NBA.com... yesterdays ladder ranked him in the 11-15 range.

Dribble and score guard latest MVP reference points were Russ with triple-double average and Harden with his ridiculous iso scoring year. Don isnt flashy like them.

Dominant bigs are the current MVP trend. Suns had the best record by 8 games last year and Booker was barely mentioned.

Somewhat agreed he won't win it or even get much consideration most of this season, but the usage issues in Cleveland are bigger than him getting usage anyway , and he has less usage but not much less than here. I think taking the ball out of Garlands hands, has not helped the bigs there at all, despite getting so much scoring from Don. Allen is not getting the touches he got at all last season from Garland and is an after-thought for Don. just on observation.
Overall that team is on the rise, but I would not be at all surprised if the backcourt is blown up, as soon as next seasons deadline, if they didn't go deep in the playoffs this season. I expect the others on the roster that shared the wealth of accolades and love, won't be getting much anymore, including Garland although it won't matter for him since he is paid a ransom. I don't expect Garland to make another all star game besides as an injury replacement, as long as Don is there either. I don't think the Cavs front office had any idea what they had in the Finnisher, or they would have featured him more than never, and not had to give up so many picks in the summer deal.
