Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

Tony Jones is on Spotify live with Marc Stein right now...he said both teams are motivated to get a deal done for Donovan, and they're just trying to get to a place where both teams can be happy with the trade. He also said the Jazz are definitely not afraid to keep Donovan into the season if they don't get an offer from the Knicks that they like, but he thinks a deal likely gets done before camp begins and Stein also thinks a deal gets done before the season begins.

Stein said his intel is that the Knicks are trying to give up only 4 or 5 first round picks, but he heard Ainge is asking for 7. Tony thinks it takes at least 5 first rounders to get a deal done, slight chance it only takes 4, but definitely not less than that. Tony said that the Knicks have some nice young talent but none of them will ever be at Donovan's level, so the 1st round picks are the most valuable thing to the Jazz.

Stein said he heard that Ryan Smith was initially interested in keeping both Rudy and Don because of the All-Star game being in Utah, but Danny Ainge's influence and voice in the front office shifted the Jazz toward making these moves. He says Ainge's level of influence is rare in the NBA.

Tony says a number of teams are interested in Donovan but the Knicks definitely have the most to offer in terms of draft picks and young players, and they are also the most motivated team to get him.

Tony also said it's still possible that the Jazz keep Donovan and use the haul from the Rudy trade to re-tool around him. I have a really had time seeing this happening.

Saw a tweet earlier saying that media will not be invited to the Brunson introduction tomorrow. Likely don't want questions about DM dominating the occasion.
Won’t matter. Their big FA acquisition is being way overshadowed by the deal they haven’t made yet. Spotlight is only going to get brighter starting tomorrow.

Jerry West is 84 and people say he's in charge of Clippers so......
They have the deepest front office in the league... West is one voice. Riley very well may be there... but 77+ is an age where there should be zero assumptions about availability.
