I think the basic frameworks are there. Not sure what percentage I’d go with because the devil is always in the details…

From the lakers perspective they can now discuss Lebrons extension which will help determine how far they will go… we inch closer to September 6th when we can put all chips on the table… that puts a little more hustle on NYs side as it opens up more possibilities for us to do a more complete deal. You get closer to training camps when these things need to be resolved.

I don’t think anything will come from the tampering investigations (at least not anything significant) but that might be another consideration… they may want to hurry up and spend those picks before the league takes them away (kinda kidding).

There are just a few too many things in the air and no real urgency at all… so everyone can sit comfy for a couple weeks. Meanwhile we get to enjoy regurgitated trade rumors and ideas with no end… and endure the strangely confident Knicks fans talking about how Rose has Ainge by the testes.

It wouldn't, necessarily. But if there are pieces going between the Knicks and Lakers then it would behoove all parties to make it one deal, otherwise there would be the moratorium on trading aggregated players that would be an obstacle to finishing out other parts of the deal.

Westbrick's contract is worth a tuckfon of free capspace next offseason and it's been pretty consistently reported Utah does not want take on unnecessarily long contracts. Knicks have the picks to facilitate Mitchell departing Utah, but they aren't complete on expiring deals next offseason (I think). So Utah divests a few longer deals AND gains an extra pick or two by taking on Westbrook? Giggity.
 
Can someone explain how a buyout, or waiving, of Westbrook would work? Whenever people say that, I always think of Kramer telling Jerry, "they just write it off." Do we pay him the full $47MM, and send him on his way? Or do we waive him, then say a team agrees to pay him $10MM this year, do we then pay the remaining $37MM? That's just a **** ton of money to pay a guy to go play somewhere else. Not my money, so I couldn't care less, but someone walk me through this.

I think that's how it works. I don't know about waivers, but I think the other team would be stuck with a bunch there, so most likely he clears waivers, we're stuck with all of it unless someone picks him up for vet min (which they do), so we pay $47M - 2-4M or whatever his minimum is.

Or we just hang onto him, of course.

You're likely paying nearly the entire salary minus w/e the veteran minimum is.

Either way you are giving him the money and he isnt play for the Utah Jazz, so might as well do the option that makes him happy and let's him go somewhere else.
 
47M is so much to pay a guy that doesn’t play for your team…. Yeesh!!!

It’s the right move… just such a huge buyout. If you work in a Conley or JC or newly acquired Fournier into the deal it saves some dough next year and opens up more space… it’s just a staggering one year amount. I can see why some owners would just choke a little at it. Can’t believe the Lakers gave up good players and a pick to get him.

I don’t think it’s possible but I’m going to lmao if the deal ends up being a lot different from what we think. At this point it’s likely possible we hit the exact iteration of what the deal is somewhere in the archives of JazzFanz.
