if only your persistence and dedication could be channeled toward something productive... solving the lockout? a championship for the Jazz? cheaper and cleaner energy? a cure for cancer? the end of war? world peace?

The thing is, that if the owners are not stopped now - when will it ever end?
They have a profitable league and they still jeopardized the season. If the players roll over and give them everything they want, what will stop the owners from doing this again. Appeasement is not an option.
The owners have made a calculation that they have more leverage than the players so they can push them around and take a larger share of the pie. That logic will cause a lockout at the end of every CBA.
The players have to take a stand NOW.

I can think of 280 million reasons (including amortization) why your claim of a profitable league is flawed. And even if it was a profitable league, it's not a sure return on investment. I don't think the NBA's claim that they have had to loan money to some teams is just for show.
Um, the NFL players gave up concessions to the tune of around 6 percentage points; not sure why the NBA players think that they are immune from the same economic realities. The difference this time is that revenue has gone down and expenses are flat to moderately up, and it's not unreasonable for the players to take an overall 10% to 15% pay cut (i.e., 5% to 7% off the BRI) to fall in line with the NFL. Unless you're a person (or son of a person) who travels from place to place with no fixed home.

Revenue has not gone down - NBA revenue was higher in 2011 than at any point in league history*, and player profits were ~57% of that (just like every other year in the CBA. If expenses are up its because owners are blatantly monkeying with the numbers either through accounting tricks or by having the teams do business with their outside companies at a loss.
* the league had 4.3 billion in net revenue in 2011

i will admit that some individual franchises were unprofitable. that sounds like a revenue sharing issue between the players.
further, at least one of the loans made to teams was used not for day to day expenses by that team but by the owners in an outside business venture. I'm sure a thorough audit would reveal that most of the rest of the loans were similarly for show.

What people don't seem to realize is that this is an IMPORTANT political issue. in this country we have record corporate profits paired with the highest unemployment in a generation.
The question remains is it morally acceptable to take and take and take from your workforce even when you are making a profit? With the public siding with the owners, we are sending a message to the executive class that yes it is OK.

.....what the public DO realize is how ungodly it is to be paying these pathetic looking punks all that money per game and then seeing little to no effort to play defense, improve there shooting, work within a team concept, and not act like imbicils everytime they dunk the ball, just because they are 6 feet 8 inches tall and can do it!!!
