What's new

Mormon LeBron (Jabari Parker of Simeon HS)

Well, Brigham Young, anyway. I don't see Joseph Smith using that phrase.

So you've established that early LDS leaders were racist. Guess what? So were 99% of the other religious leaders of their time.

It's a good thing, then, that we don't feel like that makes them inerrant.

I guess it's also a good thing no Islamic leaders have ever been racist. Oh, wait...

The problem isn't that Brigham Young was a terrible racist (history has already proven that fact for us), the problem is that he is on record many times stating that his racist beliefs were divine in nature and sanctioned by the almighty.

I've actually always been fascinated by the relationship between modern day mormons and Brigham Young. Probably no single individual is as responsible for saying numerous idiotic things that make so many issues uncomfortable for the LDS church even to this day. Yet, while he was running around saying all of those awful things, he was alledgedly doing so while also being the voice of god for his restored church.

I have to believe that most rational mormons read alot of BY's quotes and just cringe. Just an opinion from an outsider, but it seems like most mormons would rather steer extremely clear of discussing Brigham Young and his ideals when it comes to talking with non-members.

The founding fathers were slave owners yet we still praise them for their accomplishments, and the majority of white men in America at that time thought exactly the same as Brigham if not worse. We look back at it now and judge but put it into context. Everyone is a product of their environment.

As for him mixing his racism and religion that sin is on him. There is no doctrine that a prophet does not sin.

Our founding fathers where many things, but none of them were considered to be prophets. Using them as an example is foolish and a pretty blatant attempt to cloud the issue.

As far as BY mixing racism and religion, it boils down to something deeper than a prophet being foulable. That's not the argument. In fact, it NEVER has been the argument. The argument is: Can you really call somebody a prophet when they are spewing racial hate and basically saying that those beliefs are shared by god?

Again Brigham was a product of his environment like everyone else. I am not here to judge him. But do I believe he was allowed to sin? Yes. Do I agree with what he said? No.

Whatever other Mormons say the church has evolved with society. I'm sure Brigham would not even recognize today's church.

Even today there are people in the church that say some crazy stuff. It happens all the time. But that just comes with religion.

With that said, BY had some of the most profound and spiritual quotes from the church. Not everyone is perfect and he acted as a man while being the mouth piece of god more than once.

I do not understand why this kid's religion is even important. He sounds like a great kid. Heck I would even state why is his race important? I know "fans" like to hold up "their kind" as a shining example of the greatness of their species or religion but will they stand by the person if he/she disappoints them?
