What's new

So safe to say Dante's a bust?

Dante showed some nice promise tonight. He just needs to lock himself in the gym and shoot corner 3s. If he can force defenders to respect his jumper it will open up his drives to the hoop where he can utilize his quickness and length. I think he has good potential for dimes inside the paint too.

He was the only player who showed up at all against the Clippers. He has generally played pretty well this month and is shooting 50% in February. He does well when he is allowed to run the point and control the ball. He really would look much better on a bad team that let him do a lot more and get better stats. This team is too good to let him be as ball dominant as he is used to being and the role he is best at. He does not play well at all off the ball. Maybe this will be better for his development in the long run to be on a good team and have to work hard to get minutes. I dont know. I am fairly confident he will at least be a solid starter in a couple years or maybe even as soon as next year if he stays healthy.

Have to disagree. Sure he still isn't hitting his open shots but he is constantly cutting and providing screens. What more can you ask?

No, he just needs to focus on being aggressive. "locking himself in the gym and shooting corner 3's" isnt going to do anything mid-season. He needs to gain confidence doing things he is good at, not trying to be a 3pt shooter. With confidence from playing well he will become a better shooter.

I just watched NBA.com's top 10 and numbers 10-2 were pretty meh yet no Dante. Not that it was an overly spectacular dunk but it was way more impressive than Korver hitting a 3 five feet behind the arc or Westbrook dunking on a fast break.

Dante made a strategic mistake by sitting out a year. By sitting, he did not put his elite draft status at risk. But his development was stalled by not competing and not training with top training staff. Of course this error was compounded by his ACL vacation year. So now his learning curve is the same as a typical 19 year old, not 21. This will likely backfire as it likely lowers his RFA value after next year.

Silver lining is that if Dante turns out to be very good to elite, the Jazz could sign him on a more reasonable contract (compared to if his game were "fully baked" when he hits RFA).

Time will tell. I'm still hopeful. Now that he seems to have solidified the backup PG role, he should get adequate minutes for the rest of the season to continue to improve.

I just found this on basketball reference.com

Exum's Net Rating by Month:
October: -17.7
November: -5.3
December: 3.4
January: 8.3
February: 12.3

It probably doesn't mean much, but the trend is encouraging.

Awesome. Quin is the master at development i have heard. He worked on rudy and made him into a borderline all star. Now he starts on Dante. Lyles is up next year.

tbh, without knowing these good stats you provided i would have guessed this to be the case.

Was cool how he spun around and landed backwards in a crouching tiger. **** ESPN.

I agree. I have watched Exum a few times warming up shooting. He hits most of his threes warming up and his form is okay this season when he is set. When things are going well for him on the court he is much more likely to hit those threes. But he needs to take those wide open threes. If he does not Quinn benches him plus it kills or offense when anyone passes up wide open threes.

I've seen the same thing in warm up so he's a good shooter. I don't think it's just a confidence issue though. He has tweaked his shot an attempt to fix it. I don't think he's put in the reps for it to be natural to him. When he shoots badly in the game it's the same ugly shot he had as a rookie. Even then he still release of the ball little too low during warm ups. I think the confidence will come but it's going to take a lot of work too. None of us knows if he's actually going to put in that time. I hope he does.

Obviously, Exum was always gonna be a playmaker in the league. I wonder how much he'll run the offense next year. Should be exciting.

Btw skankbro, beantown's got a 15+ pager about Tom Brady

I once saw Ostertag drill three pointers at about a 70 percent clip in warmups.

Pretty much every nba player looks like a good shooter in warmup.

Yes
Also when I played with Ronnie price while shooting around he started at the three point line and took a shot and made it. Then took a step back, shot and made it. Took another step back, shot and made it...... didn't miss until he was well beyond half court.

Nba players should look like great three point shooters when unguarded in warmups. Especially wings and point guards.

Watching X hit threes in warmups is not a good indication that he is a good three point shooter by nba standards.
