What's new

Coronavirus

So I got my COVID booster, and flu shot, Thursday afternoon. Haven't really felt bad or anything but I've been sleeping 10-11 hours the last couple nights, which isn't normal for me.
I got my flu shot and had no side effects other than a sore shoulder for a bit. Going to get my booster some time this month. What brand was your booster?

For my first two shots I got Pfizer. For the booster they gave me a choice of Moderna or Pfizer and I picked Moderna.

Huh. I got moderna for my first two. What do you think I should choose for booster? Does it matter? Is it better to mix and match or makes no difference?

I don't know if there's a definitive answer. I kind of felt like I was covering more bases doing it this way but I have no idea if it's better or worse.

I got Pfizer for all 3. Felt sore and tired the day after shot 2 and the booster as well. Didn't feel sick, just ached like I had the flu. I got my flu and Pfizer booster at the same time.

Pfizer loses its efficacy more rapidly than Moderna.
If you got Moderna initially, not a bad idea to get the same, but mixing has a certain appeal.
If you got Pfizer initially, I think it’s a no brainer to mix and get Moderna.

It's funny because Pfizer was the hot vac at launch. Most people who were eager to get a vaccine wanted to get the Pfizer one if they could.

I got Moderna for all 3 shots. The booster was the easiest one of the 3. Less arm soreness, just a bit sleepy the next day. The first two weren't bad, just had a bit of a headache, sore arm, and fatigue.

You're welcome. And I mean what I said. I was being a dick when using the example of me going around shooting a gun. Uncalled for and I apologize.
Nah, dude. You're not a dick.

I got Moderna originally, and a Moderna booster a few days ago. But I believe AI-O-Meter mentioned somewhere that it’s better to mix. I have seen that suggestion elsewhere as well, such as here:

The limited data on mixing vaccines shows that getting a booster different than your original dose or doses provides better protection. The difference is most prominent for people whose original shot was the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

People already mix vaccine types for other illnesses, including the flu and shingles. Different types of vaccines teach the immune system how to fight viruses in different ways. That means mixing vaccines could make the immune system stronger and smarter, because it will learn how to fight viruses in more than one way, said Dr. Shobha Swaminathan, principal investigator for the Moderna Phase 3 clinical trial at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

It is other people's business.

It's my firm opinion that property rights have not been overridden by people wanting to not get vaccinated without any consequences, so if an employer wants to keep their operation, including them self and their other employees safe, they have every right to require vaccines and/or frequent testing.

I work with a guy I like, three other people he worked closely with tested positive for COVID and took their mandatory time off. He didn't get tested although he almost certainly was sick, and he continued to work because he didn't want to lose out on his OT. Was that just his own personal business? I sure don't ****ing think so. I worked with him several times while he was sick. This was pre-vaccine.
This makes me think of perfect attendance awards in school. One of my daughters had major problems with illness in school, caught everything, and with asthma and other issues like this she would get severely sick. But all those kids who went to school spreading snot everywhere so they could get the perfect attendance awards still got their award and everyone cheered, while they were directly responsible for my daughter being in the hospital for over a week each year of elementary school. Of course some of them went because their parents wouldn't or couldn't take time off from work to care for a sick child, but it still affected our daughter very negatively, and us who had to pay the medical bills. If an employer requires use of PPE and you don't want to use it, you can get fired. Same with the vaccine now, and I'm ok with that. There are lots of places not requiring it. There will be jobs to be had.

No need to apologize and your comment means a lot.

The virus sucks and I'm probably short-sighted.

Love you and GF. I've learned a lot from you two.

It's almost always a mistake when I look in this thread.

Since the start of the pandemic, Vermont has 61.4 total deaths per 100k population and Florida has 280.9.

Even if you limit the data to the current wave, say from July 1 to now, Vermont has 20.2 deaths per 100k and Florida has 105.0.

Are you cherry-picking a single day of data? A single week?
Glad to see you back.

Never thought of it like this.

Good post.

I see California is booming while Florida is doing fabulous... Who would've thought? Oh, that's right anybody with an ounce of self worth and dignity like me. Called this. People literally think wearing a mask and hiding was going to stop a world wide virus. Mind bafflingly stupid. I also see the efficacy of said experimental drug is even more terrible than we thought. Who would've thought? A drug that's been in production for months has flaws we are just now finding? The lack of common sense with vax Nazis is truly unfathomable. You are truly a terrible bunch whoever you are. You know who you are. And I don't mean people who are for the vaccine, I mean the true, no exaggerating modern day Nazis. I want that to be clear I have nothing against those that willingly took an experimental drug. I understand it has it's good parts too. I'm against the force and blatant tyranny.

California total cases at 12K/100,000 people, Florida at 17K/100,000.
California total deaths at 182/100,000 people, Florida at 281/100,000.

Why do you want 50% more Californians to have died? Why do you love killing off people so much?

Who would've thought?
Indeed.

And I don't mean people who are for the vaccine, I mean the true, no exaggerating modern day Nazis.
They would all be voting for Republicans.

I'm against the force and blatant tyranny.
No one is being forced to vaccinate.

The work suggests that a subset of people already had memory T-cells from previous infections from other seasonal coronaviruses causing common colds, which protected them from Covid-19.

These immune cells “sniff out” proteins in the replication machinery – a region of Covid-19 shared with seasonal coronaviruses – and in some people this response was quick and potent enough for the infection to be cleared at the earliest stage. “These pre-existing T-cells are poised ready to recognise SARS-CoV-2,” said Swadling.

The study adds to the known spectrum of possibilities after exposure to Covid-19, ranging from escaping infection entirely to severe disease.

The finding is particularly significant because the T-cell arm of the immune response tends to confer longer lasting immunity, typically of years rather than months, compared with antibodies. Nearly all existing Covid-19 vaccines focus on priming antibodies against the vital spike protein that helps SARS-CoV-2 enter cells. These neutralising antibodies give excellent protection against severe illness. However, the immunity wanes over time and a potential weakness of spike-based vaccines is that this region of the virus is known to mutate.

“Some people with COVID-19 have symptoms that last for months - it's known as long COVID. Scientists now think long COVID is likely three different syndromes lumped into one”.

More than half of Covid patients develop Long Covid. Who needs brain fog??

My experience:

04.11 - wife got suddenly 38C degree fever. Both the home- and PCR test were positive, home test for daughter was negative. I did not do any tests.
09.11 - daughter's both home and PCR test positive, otherwise no symptoms. My PCR was borderline so doctor scheduled another test for me.
11.11 - my PCR test again borderline. Test performer called me and told to get another test. I told, that my previous was borderline and i have no symptoms. That was OK, but my doctor still told me make another test.
14.11 - my PCR was negative.
16.11 - my daughter's home test negative.

My doctor suspects that de facto i had COVID, but de jure obviously not. Probably will do some blood sample analysis in december to decide when should i make a third shot.
So far my wife in general is OK. Sometimes there is a small occasional 37,2C fever and feeling like you had little bit of wine. My wife got her shots at the end of march and mid-may; i got mid april and at the end of may.
Obviously not doing any celebrations a la "COVID is conquered", because well, you never know what the future brings on. Doctor suspects that my wife got the virus on 01.11 when visiting a dentist. It was 1 hour long procedure and the windows on that room could not be opened. Between 04-14.11 i worked from home and occasionally visited grocery stores, but otherwise kept low profile.
