Coronavirus

Holy ****. Does anyone else have friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances that keep saying the virus isn't that bad and *insert blahblahblah do you know how many people die from the flu or it only kills old and sick people*?

The thing is, the flu is really bad, so we certainly don't need people ignoring something that looks significantly worse. I trust we'll develop an effective vaccine in time, but at this point I'm expecting our worst epidemic since 1918.

We’re up to 1,000 here in the US. Last I checked, 4 cases now in Utah.

I ask them their sources and none of them can give me any. Lol

Oh yeah.. Yesterday I had that sort of discussion on fb with a friend. Guy is highly intelligent yet claims that it's all completely unnecessary panic, that WHO counts the mortality wrong way, someone wants to just make money out of etc. On the positive note one filthy guy from work started washing his hands after using the toilet finally.

lol wut

there have been hundreds of sources that show many people contract the flu and die from it annually. How seemingly case by case of corona deaths seem to be old and/or medically compromised individuals.

Great article by Max Boot on how Fox News is misinforming the public on coronavirus:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...contempt-truth-has-never-been-more-dangerous/

Even on Monday, Trump was comparing covid-19 to the ordinary flu, even though its mortality rate appears to be many times higher and its economic effect infinitely greater...

Monday, Trish Regan was on Fox Business denouncing coronavirus concern as “yet another attempt to impeach the president.” In her demented view, Trump’s opponents are deliberately inducing stock-market losses (presumably Democrats don’t own 401(k)s?) in an attempt to “to demonize and destroy the president.”

I would be interested in hearing experts discuss the merits of purposefully exposing large portions if the population to the virus. We know that much of the population is at low risk (children, teens, healthy young adults, etc.). This low risk population is also the manner through which the virus is primarily transmitted. So, by infecting these low risk population we would 1) remove the uncertainty about if these low risk groups are contagious, and 2) eliminate the major pathway for the pandemic to spread (kind of like how we do with vaccines). This controlled infection would also allow an important portion of the population to continue with normal life (school, work, etc.) which helps the economy.

I would be happy to just get it over with for me and my family and know that it is no longer an issue for any of us. We used to do this kind of thing to kids with chickenpox (I remember having a friend sent over to play with me when I had them because the family wanted to expose the boy before he got any older).

Edit: So, it looks like they are not sure that having the virus once provides immunity going forward. Evidence suggests that it generally does, but there has been at least one case where someone has tested positive twice (there is concern that one may have been a false positive).

I have heard that you can get it more than once though. If that's the case then getting it over with might not be a thing

If you can get it more than once, this thing is never going away unless everyone agrees to stay inside for 3 weeks so that we can stop infecting each other. It is just to contagious otherwise!

I'm hoping for some kind of vaccine/cure. I know that 3M is working on one. Hopefully they will be successful
