Do you see any other players on that list that you think are/were good? Or just Exum?
Yeah, like I said one stat that is kind of useless for him. Cool. What was Exums PER post all-star when he got healthy? How does that compare to others at his age?
When Gobert was Exums age his PER was better but not much it was 12.9. Although their PER was the same post all-star at the same age.
A lot of people thought Gobert would be an awesome defender off the bench and not much more. They thought he would be a huge liability on offense back then and even the next couple years. He obviously has developed a lot over the last few years. Exum is done developing? Just like Gobert stopped developing at that age right? Exum will take time but his improvements are huge.
PER does not take in your defense. It rewards stats. Really good defense does not provide a stat. How many 19 year old players have played as good of defense as Exum did? Especially how many players at 19 played that good of defense at the guard position. Yes his defense was down when he was injured but he bounced back after getting healthy/recovered from his major injury. PER does not also look good on a young developing player on a good team like the Jazz were this year. If he played on Phoenix or some other crap team and was given free reign and minutes his PER would have been better and so would his stats.
You like PER so how about this. How many players have improved their PER every month of an entire season like Exum did?
Also Exums PER was 13.5 in the playoffs this year. That is a solid PER for a 21 year old kid. Why not run that and see what kind of players had that PER in the playoffs at that age? We start to get players like Iguadola, Draymond Green, Carmelo Anthony, Clyde Drexler, Jermaine Oneil, AK47, Derrick Rose, Reggie Lewis(RIP), Shroder, Charles Oakley, Walt Frazier, Baron Davis and so on. Some of those like Davis, Reggie Lewis and Drexler played about the same minutes and had almost the same PER at the same age in the playoffs. They turned out okay and Exum is already playing defense at a better level than those 3.
Also clearly you didnt watch Exum the last half of the season and the last game of the season because you would have seen the potential oozing out of him. He is already showing signs of being an elite defender, he has elite speed, his shooting is greatly improved the last half of the season, his handle is improved and he showed it off against GS, he is getting to the rim at will, he is finishing more and more at the rim.
Hayward finished at the rim at 58% at Exums age. Exum is finishing at a 55% rate. I think Exum can improve in this area just like Hayward did and many others.
Its fine if you want to hate on him and look for negatives or search any way you can to find something to show he is a bust because his game will speak for itself going forward. The only thing that can stop him is injuries.
