Good. Justice was served. Can’t imagine life in prison as a racist former cop is going to be very fun. But Derek has certainly earned it! Enjoy!

Rep Waters was way out of line with her comments. She needs to be more mindful of the power of her office and use her words to turn down the temperature.

we still have a perverted out of control criminal justice system that needs to gutted. Reform the police, end the war on drugs, get rid of private prisons, and stop incarcerating so many people! There’s still a lot of work to be done. No reason why anyone should still be locked up for marijuana related crimes.

But this is a good first step in serving justice and restoring a little bit of faith in our country.

2. Absolutely. They should be held accountable if the shooting was not justified.

3. Everyone who has written, tweeted that the kid was unarmed and doesn't explain the 800 millisecond thing.

It's funny how I always have to repeat my opinions on things like this.

I don't think the kid needed to be shot, but I have the luxury of hindsight.

He was running, with a gun in his hand, discreetly got rid of the gun the cops saw in his hand all the while turning around and raising his hands at them.

If the cops hesitated then shot, it's murder. 100% This one is tough cause I can't say the cop didn't fear for his life.

Honestly, that seems fair. This is a bad dude, but I'm not sure he deserves life in prison. Just my opinion.

At the same time, let's all keep in mind that this wasn't one rogue guy. The law enforcement system needs to get a lot better. Someone hired this guy. Someone trained this guy. Someone deemed him fit for service. Someone passed him on a psych evaluation. Some of the methods he used were supposedly allowed by their policies. If we as a society consider justice served just because this guy was found guilty, nothing will really change. A lot of people whos names will never be mentioned are partially culpable.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the other officers that were there during the incident.

Ok, I looked up his record, He did spent time in prison, more than once, and it is mainly for cocaine possession, so he did have a drug problem. His record is as follows:
  1. He served five years in prison for armed robbery which he participated in with five other individual and committed in 2007. It was the last time he committed a criminal offense.
  2. Altogether his criminal record includes 5 convictions related to theft, possession, and trade of coke. His last cocaine arrest dates back to 2005, and he served ten months in the state jail. So, that gives the police the right to brutalize him? Let me tell you, I've been in prison and they are brutal and racist, and if you go to a max security prison, you will find mostly black inmates.

I know it was 30 years ago, but I almost took an English teaching position in a max security prison in upstate NY. I was hired and went to sign paperwork and get my ID at the prison. As I passed through the hallway past the cells, I saw no white inmates and the guards addressed the inmates as "boy." But the greatest shocker was when I entered the guard's office where I had to do my paperwork and get my ID. Draping one of the wall's was a huge 15-foot Confederate flag. And no, this wasn't Alabama or South Carolina. This was upstate NY. After I left I declined the offer of the job. I also called the State Department of Corrections and reported it. Whether they took it down is anyone's guess.

Ironically this is about the 10th time I've seen in this post as Alabama being oh so racist. I've lived all over the world and the states and Alabama is probably one of if not the least racist state currently in existence.

Now Arkansas, that place is crazy racist.

See that wasn't so hard was it.
 
Not only is what Rep Waters said a problem because it encouraged potential violence. The bigger issue for me was that she was advocating for a system where the outcome of a trial should be determined by factors and influences that exist outside the courtroom. That is not our system. That is not a system that can function in any way that I would describe as "justice."

If Chauvin had been found innocent the issue I would have had is with the law primarily, but also with the common regard people have for the actions of law enforcement as being inherently justified and the disregard so many still have (and have been expressed in this thread) for the lives of black people.
 
Are the other officers going to trial? Have they been fired at least?

What reforms would you like to see? One thing Id like to see changed is if you’re fired from one force, you cannot be re-hired by another force. The officer who ****ed Lauren McClosky’s case and was fired for showing fellow officers nude photos and lying about it from the U of U police force and found a job in Logan’s force. That shouldn’t happen. If you’ve proven to be a disaster on one force, you shouldn’t be able to be hired for another to further harass and abuse the public. The standards for police work are already embarrassingly low.
