What's new

Finally took the plunge and published my book

If you paid her to produce a cover, ultimately you get to decide when it's done; regardless of the medium she's using. You are the customer, so you shouldn't have to settle.
If your brother is willing to give you another one, take him up on it and pick which one you like better.

By the way, I really suggest you modify the title. "Might and Magic" is too reminiscent of the computer games. In fact, it might even be trademarked.

She sent me the finished version today. Here is what I came up with:

I plan to use this as the cover for the Kindle version until my brother finishes his cover. Then I will put out the print edition and change the cover.

Colton, The game was "Might and Magic" I think? This is "The Edge of Might and Magic" and refers to a scene in the book. They don't have a trademark for that. I tried to make sure that the title did not look like theirs. Besides, I came up with the title idea and wrote that scene long before I heard of the computer games.

Do you guys disagree?

The games were the "Might and Magic" and "Heroes of Might and Magic" series.

When you heard of the computer games would make no difference. I don't know if their probable trademark on the game would affect your book or not, but since computer games involve a fair amount of story-telling I think it's quite possible, which is why I brought it up. I don't know enough of the law to judge, though. (Kicky, are you reading this thread??)

But more than that, the reason I recommended the change was because the phrase "Might and Magic" is going to have certain connotations to millions of prospective readers (such as myself) that undoubtedly do not apply at all. Would be better to avoid that imo.

Crap, the more I think of it, the more you are probably right. I need to look at changing the title or I will be pelted by fanboys thinking I am doing it on purpose just to drum up sales.

I agonized over it a bit, but I think you guys were right. Changing the title is for the best. I brainstormed with some family and this is the one I like the most. It is one of the titles of our villain in the story.

That looks really good, I'd try to read it after summer semester. I think its a great choice to change the title (saves you from a headache later on). Best of luck to ya.

I'm really trying not to be a dick here, but I just thought I'd give you and honest feeling I had while viewing your book cover. It sucks and reminds me of 1992. You could do a lot better. That's just my two cents. Nothing personal and nothing but love.

That's probably why he is thinking of changing it.

I was kind of going for 1992 Tor style font actually. Those were my fantasy reading heydays. Nothing is set in stone yet. Do you guys have any font suggestions you like better? I am open to suggestions.
